The M440i Convertible swaps its predecessor's hard-top roof for a fabric soft-top that opens or closes in under 18 seconds at speeds up to 50kmph.
Priced at Rs. 1.09 crore (ex-showroom), it undercuts its direct rival, the Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet, by Rs. 7 lakh (approx.).
BMW India has officially launched the M440i Convertible at a price of Rs. 1.09 crore, ex-showroom. Positioned firmly within the brand's M Performance family, the open-top grand tourer occupies a rare and rather glamorous corner of the Indian luxury car market. It is not a car for everyone and BMW knows it. This is a lifestyle machine, built for those who want genuine performance without surrendering the pleasure of open-air motoring.
Under the bonnet sits a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine developing 369bhp and 500Nm of torque. That power is channelled through an eight-speed automatic gearbox and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system, sending the car from 0 to 100 kmph in 4.9 seconds.
Top speed is electronically capped at 250 kmph. For a car that weighs as much as a convertible must, those are thoroughly impressive numbers.
One of the more notable changes in this generation is the move away from the folding metal hard-top roof that the earlier model used.
In its place sits a fabric soft-top, which can be raised or lowered in 18 seconds and operates at speeds of up to 50kmph. It is a shift that makes the car lighter and arguably more characterful, in keeping with the traditional convertible ethos.
Aesthetically, the M440i carries the familiar 4 Series look with confidence. The large BMW kidney grille dominates upfront, flanked by sleek LED headlamps, while sculpted body panels and sporty bumpers give it a purposeful stance.
The car rides on 19-inch alloy wheels in a staggered setup, and at the rear, wraparound LED tail lamps are paired with dual exhaust outlets that make no attempt to disguise this car's intentions.
Inside, the four-seat cabin is built around a dual-screen arrangement comprising a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
A flat-bottom steering wheel, leather upholstery, and a range of comfort features round out an interior that feels appropriately premium for its asking price.
The M440i Convertible goes up against the Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet, which is currently priced at Rs. 1.16 crore, ex-showroom. That Rs. 7 lakh price advantage, combined with BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive setup, could well tip the scales in favour of the Munich-based model for buyers who are weighing up their options in this exclusive space.
