  • A fine of Rs. 2,000 and/or imprisonment up to 3 months for the first offence. Subsequent offences may result in a fine of Rs. 4,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 3 months.

Driving without a helmet:

  • A fine of Rs. 500.

Challan penalties in Kerala

Listed below are some of the latest traffic violations and their penalties in Kerala as per the New Motor Vehicle Amendment Act, 2019:

Over-speeding

  • A penalty of Rs. 1000 for a light motor vehicle

  • A penalty of Rs. 2,000 for a medium passenger goods vehicle

Drunken driving

  • A fine of Rs. 10,000 and/or imprisonment up to 6 months for the first offence.

Subsequent offences may result in higher penalties and longer imprisonment

Not wearing a seatbelt

  • A fine of Rs. 1,000 for the driver

  • A fine of Rs. 500 for passengers

Driving without a number plate:

  • A fine of Rs. 2,000 for two and three-wheelers, Rs. 3,000 for four-wheelers and Light Motor Vehicles (LMV), and Rs. 5,000 for other types of vehicles.

Driving without insurance and a license

  • A fine of Rs. 2,000 and/or imprisonment up to 3 months for the first offence. Subsequent offences may result in higher penalties

Not carrying valid driving documents

  • A fine of Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000

Violating pollution control norms

  • A fine of Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 10,000 depending on the offence

Unauthorised parking and riding with mobile phone

  • A fine of Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000

  • A fine of Rs. 2,000 for riding with a handheld phone
