Fuel prices in Ambala have been on the rise since the last few months and the trend looks here to stay for at least a few more months as well. While the hike in fuel prices may not affect those who travel by public transport on a daily basis, those who commute by their own vehicles may feel the pinch. If you are one of those who feel the pinch, knowing the current petrol price in Ambala will help you a great deal.

M Web Banner for PPL In Ambala, in 2017 a trend to revise the price of petrol and diesel on a daily basis was set. This replaced the beginning and mid-month revision schedule that was followed earlier. This does not automatically mean that prices change every day. However, businesses and individuals throughout India, including cities such as Ambala, are equally affected by a change in prices.

A closer look at what drives petrol and diesel prices

Several factors affect the price of petrol and diesel. In taking a look at what elements of the market lead to a change in prices, both international and domestic criteria will need to be taken into account.

At the international level, the following two factors have a bearing on oil prices:

· The per-barrel price of crude oil in the international market

· Foreign exchange rates that apply on a given day

Now, these two factors are in turn, dependent on other macro influences such as economic and geopolitical conditions in the world. A classic example would be the effect that the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has had on fuel availability.

The domestic context

Crude oil is bought by Oil Marketing Companies or OMCs in the international market from let’s say, e.g., an OPEC member state. At this stage, freight charges get added to the overall cost.

The oil then goes through a refinement process and gets converted to petrol, diesel, and other derivates. The refinement process also brings with it costs that have to be borne by the OMCs. Interestingly, the presence of these refineries in India also means that the country is able to export refined petro products. In the domestic market, refined petrol or diesel is then sold by the OMC to dealers at a profit. From here on, dealers will have to incur additional expenses in the form of excise duty, transportation, and other costs. In fact, this is the stage where most of the price rise occurs in the form of central and state levies.

By the time it reaches the Ambala fuel stations, the price would have gone up significantly. As India progresses, its energy needs also grow. The ease and comfort of personal vehicles mean owning a two or a four-wheeler is now seen as a necessity and not a luxury.

Conclusion

Money spent on travel and transport is a major contributing factor when it comes to household and corporate budget considerations. Whether it’s a short weekend getaway with the family or a daily commute to the office - keeping track of fuel price changes and associated costs has never been easier.

FAQs

Why is the petrol price in Ambala different from that in other Indian cities?

State taxes that are levied on petrol and diesel vary across different cities. Consequently, the prices charged by retail fuel stations in different parts of India also vary.

The petrol price in Ambala itself may not be uniform across the city. In this instance, the proximity of the different bunks in Ambala to the main supply station in the city can be the driving factor for the slight change in price. This intra-city fluctuation is minimal though.

Are there any advantages to having a daily (dynamic) price mechanism?

The daily price setting is in keeping with international best practices. India only adopted what was already in practice around the world. In addition to aligning practices with international players, this step also aimed to mitigate price speculations that used to take place in the Indian oil and gas sector earlier.

What are some of the other reforms brought about by the Government of India in the oil and gas sector in recent times?

In mid-2022, the Government brought about a reduction in excise duty on both petrol and diesel. This welcome move will lessen the burden on Indian citizens. India is also working towards meeting its commitments under the Paris Agreement through a long-term plan to reduce its fossil-fuel dependency.
