Volkswagen Taigun Crosses 1 Lakh Sales Milestone in India After Three Years
Volkswagen India is celebrating a significant achievement as the Volkswagen Taigun reaches the 1 lakh sales milestone, three years after its debut in the Indian market on September 23, 2021. The SUV has gained strong traction in both the domestic and export markets, marking its success in the competitive midsize SUV segment.
According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Volkswagen sold 67,140 units of the Taigun in India by the end of August 2024. An additional 32,742 units were exported, bringing the total to 99,882 units. After factoring in early September deliveries, the Taigun has officially surpassed the 1 lakh sales mark.
FY2022: 16,889 units
FY2023: 21,736 units (+28.69% YoY)
FY2024: 20,485 units (-5.75% YoY)
FY2025 (up to August): 8,030 units (-3.29% YoY)
Volkswagen's highest domestic sales of the Taigun were recorded in FY2023, with 21,736 units sold. Since then, the figures have dipped slightly, reflecting the increasing competition in the midsize SUV market.
FY2022: 2,851 units
FY2023: 7,958 units (+179% YoY)
FY2024: 12,621 units (+58.59% YoY)
FY2025 (up to August): 9,312 units (+45.43% YoY)
In terms of exports, Volkswagen saw exponential growth, especially in FY2023 and FY2024, when the Taigun became a popular choice in international markets, peaking at 12,621 units in FY2024.
The Volkswagen Taigun's entry into the midsize SUV segment allowed the brand to compete with strong rivals such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Curvv, and Toyota Hyryder. The Taigun's sleek design, robust build, and focus on safety have helped it stand out in this crowded space.
Under the hood, the Taigun offers two petrol engine options:
A 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with 115hp and 175Nm of torque.
A 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine with 150hp and 250Nm of torque.
Both engine options come with manual and automatic transmission choices, catering to a wide range of customer preferences.
As of now, the Volkswagen Taigun is priced between Rs 10.90 lakh and Rs 18.70 lakh (ex-showroom), depending on the variant. To make it even more appealing, Volkswagen has rolled out festive season offers, allowing buyers to enjoy discounts and benefits of up to Rs 3.07 lakh on select models.
Volkswagen has ensured that the Taigun meets the highest safety standards. Shortly after its launch, the SUV earned a five-star Global NCAP crash-test rating, becoming one of the safest midsize SUVs in India. In June 2024, Volkswagen introduced six airbags as standard across all variants, further boosting its safety credentials.
With its combination of competitive pricing, excellent safety features, and appealing festive discounts, the Volkswagen Taigun continues to be a strong contender in India’s midsize SUV market, further solidified by the achievement of the 1 lakh sales milestone.
