The Government of India has come up with a brave decision quite commuter-oriented by making a FASTag plan that costs ₹250 per month for unlimited toll crossing on national highways. With this initiative, toll payments through digital routes are promoted with an eye on decongesting many of the toll plazas, thereby marking a huge difference in travel across Indian roads.
FASTag refers to an electronic toll collection method that uses radio-frequency identification (RFID) to collect toll payments automatically from vehicles. A tag is placed on the vehicle's windshield and linked with either the bank account or wallet. This helps the vehicle cross through the toll plazas without being stopped. Earlier, this facility was compulsory on national highways; however, the subscription model in question now makes it easier and cheaper to avail.
Earlier, the FASTag holders had to maintain a prepaid balance by constantly keeping an eye on toll payments and balances while traveling on the road. With the introduction of the monthly subscription plan, merely paying the toll usage fee of ₹250 per month would put an end to the hassle of frequent recharging and checking of the balances, and thus is considered by many a relief to such long-distance commuters, logistics operators, and daily office goers whose lives are already very demanding.
It provides discounts to frequent commuters, reduces delay in toll collection, and hence encourages more people to use electronic tolling. Lesser dependence on cash and smooth traffic flow at toll-plazas would also be in consonance with Indian aspirations regarding digitization and sustainability.
New users may get FASTag from NHAI's portal or from partner banks or at toll booths. The users opting for FASTag while registering or renewing may now select the scheme of Rs. 250 per month. Once activated, the amount will be auto-debited every month, giving the user an experience akin to unlimited traveling.
This speaks for itself with what clean fixation India has in the direction of smart and digitized road infrastructure. The increasing popularity of FASTag means even smoother traffic movement, lower pollution, and a transport ecosystem that is more efficient.
