Transport Department Issues E-Challan for Stationary Vehicles in Bihar
In quite an unprecedented scenario, the transport department of Uttar Pradesh generated an e-challan of ₹5,000 for a harvester vehicle in Bihar’s Rohtas district. Disturbed by this notification, the owner tried to go to the local police station to report the matter.
The harvester belonging to Parmendra Singh, a resident of Loribandh village in Karakat, Rohtas was parked along its tent in front of the home. Still, operating in Bihar only, an e-challan for ₹5,000 was generated for the vehicle for a violation that occurred in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow.
From the sources, the challan was prepared based on a photograph of a truck seized during a check by the police between Varanasi-Lucknow. However, the registration number of the truck matched Parmendra’s harvester, which is how the two were confused.
Still, after receiving the e-challan notification, Parmendra Singh really could not understand anything. He also went to Karakat police station and submitted a written and verbal complaint.
Ravi Bhushan Kumar the SHO of Karakat police station said that he had received the complaint. As per the application, the truck bearing registration number BR24 J 8388 had been parked from January 15, 2025, at Rohtas temporarily.
This mishap explains why automated systems like e-challaning which rely entirely on information technology can go wrong. It appears that the competent authorities should look into the matter and make efforts to prevent similar mistakes from being committed in future.
