MG Motors has been creating a sensation in the automotive industry with its newly-shocked concept of selling EVs without batteries. This EV has officially revealed the price range for its newest electric vehicle, the MG Windsor. Starting at ₹13.50 lakh (with battery). Well, the concept is MG will sell you their EV and battery separately. Also, it is offering a lifetime warranty on the battery pack for the first owner, assured 60 percent buyback after three years, and one-year free charging at public chargers using the eHUB mobile application.
This SUV is poised to be a strong contender in the rapidly growing electric vehicle market in India. Bookings for this electric SUV will begin on October 3, 2024.
The Windsor is offered in three variants: Excite, Exclusive, and Essence, with prices ranging from ₹13.50 lakh to ₹15.50 lakh (ex-showroom). This makes it one of the more affordable electric SUVs in India, offering an attractive package for those wanting to embrace the electric future.
The entry-level Excite model starts at ₹13.50 lakh, while the mid-tier Exclusive variant is priced at ₹14.50 lakh. The top-of-the-line Essence variant, loaded with extra features, comes in at ₹15.50 lakh. For those who don’t want to buy the battery outright, MG has retained its Battery as a Service (BaaS) option, where customers can rent the battery separately, reducing the vehicle's initial purchase price.
Powering the MG Windsor is a 38kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which provides an ARAI-certified range of 331 kilometers. While this may not be as high as some of its competitors like the Tata Nexon EV or Mahindra XUV400, it’s more than enough for daily commutes and city driving.
For charging, the Windsor is compatible with fast charging that can juice the battery from 0% to 80% in just 55 minutes using a 45kW charger. If you’re relying on standard AC chargers, it takes around 14 hours with a 3.3kW charger or 6.5 hours with a 7.7kW charger. This flexibility ensures that owners can charge their EV both at home and at public charging stations with ease.
Step inside the MG Windsor, and you’ll find a thoughtfully designed cabin that’s spacious and filled with tech features. At the heart of its interior is a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ensuring seamless connectivity for your smartphone.
The Windsor’s cabin is designed to maximize comfort, with features like 135-degree reclining rear seats, a panoramic glass roof, and ventilated front seats, perfect for Indian summers. It also boasts an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, and a 9-speaker Infinity sound system for an immersive audio experience.
One of the key highlights is its flat floor, which gives the cabin a more open and spacious feel. Combined with its floating center console and cupholders, MG has paid attention to even the smallest details.
The Windsor’s front axle-mounted electric motor delivers 136hp and 200Nm of torque, which should provide a peppy driving experience in urban environments. For those who like to have control over how their vehicle performs, MG has included four driving modes: Eco+, Eco, Normal, and Sport. Each mode adjusts the throttle response and energy consumption, allowing drivers to prioritize efficiency or performance depending on their needs.
The Windsor is a front-wheel-drive vehicle, and its lightweight battery helps maintain a good balance of performance and efficiency.
MG has packed the Windsor with a comprehensive suite of safety features. It comes with six airbags, ABS with EBD, and electronic stability control (ESC). For added convenience, the car also features front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, and all-around disc brakes.
Tech-savvy drivers will also appreciate the Windsor’s wireless connectivity features, which allow easy pairing of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, keeping you connected without the hassle of wires.
In terms of pricing, the Windsor is positioned slightly below its rivals, making it a compelling choice for budget-conscious buyers looking to switch to electric. However, while it offers a more affordable entry point, its range is slightly lower than competitors like the Tata Nexon EV, which claims a range of 465 kilometers, and the Mahindra XUV400, which boasts a 456-kilometer range.
Despite this, Windsor's features and MG’s reputation for reliability may sway buyers who are looking for a well-rounded, feature-packed EV without stretching their budget.
The MG Windsor has a lot going for it: affordable pricing, a decent driving range, and a tech-filled, comfortable interior. For city dwellers or those who want to ease into the world of electric vehicles, it’s a practical and stylish choice. While it may not boast the highest range in the market, it offers excellent value for money and the convenience of flexible charging options.
For buyers looking to balance cost, comfort, and modern technology, the Windsor is worth considering.
