The Sky's the Limit: Flying Taxis to Revolutionise Delhi-Gurugram Commute
The age of flying taxis is finally here. We all have watched those YouTube videos about flying cars in 2024 and how the world will operate. Turns out not exactly cars, but you are soon to have experienced flying taxis in India. Yes, Indigo airline’s parent company, the InterGlobe Enterprises, has taken charge of this idea. In an exciting announcement, they've teamed up with US-based Archer Aviation to launch a fleet of all-electric air taxis by 2026.
The commute from Delhi to Gurugram is tiresome and a lot of times you are stuck in the traffic for hours. Plus there is water clogging at times, which makes the commute even worse. Well the solution is at least here and expected to serve you by 2026.
Picture this: You're in the heart of Delhi, vibrant Connaught Place. Instead of braving the bumper-to-bumper traffic toward Gurugram, you stroll to a sleek rooftop landing pad. A futuristic aircraft with a dozen quiet rotors awaits. This isn't your average helicopter, it's an eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) air taxi – a marvel of innovation.
You and three other passengers settle into plush seats. The pilot, calm and composed, gives a thumbs up. The rotors whirl to life, and with a gentle lift, you're airborne! Delhi's bustling streets shrink below as you soar over the urban landscape.
"Can you believe it?" Your fellow passenger grins, "We're going to beat that 90-minute crawl in... what, 7 minutes?"
In a blink of an eye, you are already at the Gurugram landing base, where you can commute to the final destination easily. All this at an expected cost of INR 2000-3000. While this might seem a bit expensive to some, but for some, this time saved will be worth more.
"This is revolutionary, not only for travellers but also for the environment," says Delhi-based urban planner Rahul Verma. "These zero-emission air taxis are the future of transportation."

Adam Goldstein, the CEO and founder of Archer Aviation, is the creative force behind the project. "India is a prime market for air taxis," according to him, "the demand for swift, sustainable travel within these megacities is immense, and we're thrilled to partner with InterGlobe to make it a reality."
Of course, there will be difficulties. It is essential to obtain certification from organisations such as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). With its eVTOL design at advanced stages, Archer Aviation is optimistic.
This revolution in air taxis will extend beyond Delhi-Gurugram. The plan also includes Bengaluru and Mumbai, which provide quick and easy access between India's major cities. Science fiction appears to be on the verge of becoming science fact. "Forget crawling through traffic, I'm ready to take to the skies!" shouted one excited early user.
If you want to know where does India stand in terms of competition? Well you would be surprised to know that India is not lagging behind. Countries which are working on this technology include Dubai, Japan, China and South Korea, apart from India.
This is a great step as we can proceed on to become world leaders if given the opportunity.
While companies like the ePlane company have already partnered with IIT Madras to work on India’s first flying Taxi, which will be operational in a span of just 6-7 months. While China and South Korea have already progressed in terms of technology and are soon going to launch the flying taxis, Dubai is also expected to do this by 2026.
