Skoda Volkswagen's India-Centric Approach
Skoda-VW India is set for a big change strategically with the launch of the India Main Platform for EVs and the born-to-local MQB A037 for ICE and hybrid versions. Due to this, the company’s strategy is to adapt international platforms to meet India's cost, regulatory, and consumer environment which makes the market competitive and continually expanding.
India's Main Platform (IMP) for EVs
The IMP is derived from the China Main Platform, which was established to form the basis for the electric vehicles launched by Skoda-Volkswagen in India.
Key Highlights of IMP
Localized Elements: To match domestic cost structures and regulations International business expansions involve expansion by a firm of its economic activities into more than one country.
Models Planned:
Two compact electric SUVs.
One model of midsize electric SUV for every brand, Skoda and VW.
Export Focus: India will also gain from direct exports of these fully-built EVs manufactured from its assembling plant for global markets.
The IMP supersedes prior strategies for the localisation of Volkswagen‘s small MEB21G platform as a result of practicality questions.
MQB A037 for ICE and Hybrid Vehicles
As for ICE models, Skoda-Volkswagen is migrating to the MQB A037 platform fully adaptable for larger cars with hybrid engines.
Future ICE Vehicles on MQB A037
Next-Gen Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun:
Increased size and new generation electrical/electronic systems.
SDV features leading capabilities for software-defined vehicle features.
Potential 7-Seater SUV: Referring to the increased need for family-oriented cars.
Next-Gen Sedans: It will also be used in Skoda Virtus and VW Slavia.
Investment and Supplier Engagement
The building of the IMP and MQB A037 platforms should cost about €1-2 billion (₹8,000-₹17,000 crore). Another evidence of the commitment to the car market in India is that Skoda-Volkswagen has recently started sourcing parts from India to localize components.
Upcoming Challenges and Goals
As CAFE 3 norms gather momentum, Skoda-Volkswagen is under immense pressure to introduce environmentally friendly efficient cars. These include:
Plug-in hybrid vehicles and electric-drive cars.
Other variants are of a higher ICE model about the future emission standards.
Conclusion
The twin-P platform strategy of Skoda-Volkswagen seeks to meet the increasing consumption of BEV/HEV in India as well as fortify ICE supremacy. Through the strategies of localization and compliance with Indian regulations, the automaker is expected to penetrate the domestic and export markets.
Looking forward to these platforms going live and new models to hit the roads of India!
