Skoda India is making strategic moves to expand its electric vehicle (EV) lineup by exploring the possibility of introducing the Skoda Elroq electric SUV to the Indian market. This move comes alongside the already confirmed launch of the Skoda Enyaq iV. The company is also evaluating the feasibility of local assembly for both models, which could significantly impact the EV market in India. The Skoda Elroq is set for a global unveil later this year, with its European market debut scheduled for early 2025. Following a feasibility study, Skoda may commence local assembly of these SUVs in the last quarter of 2025.
Skoda India is keen on optimizing its EV strategy by potentially assembling the Enyaq and Elroq locally. Skoda India Brand Director Petr Janeba highlighted the benefits of this approach, stating, “The Enyaq and Elroq are based on the same platform. It’s a different chassis, but actually very similar. So, there is a big efficiency in the parts and components business, which we have calculated.” This shared platform could streamline production processes and reduce costs, making the local assembly an attractive option.
However, Skoda is currently assessing whether to participate in the Indian government’s recently announced EV manufacturing policy. This policy mandates that participating companies establish manufacturing facilities in India within three years and commence commercial production of EVs. In return, companies can benefit from incentives, such as reduced customs duty rates for limited imports of cars. The policy requires a minimum investment of Rs 4,150 crore, with no upper limit.
Participation in this policy could help Skoda meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) targets while allowing the import of niche EVs at a 15 percent customs duty rate, similar to Completely Knocked Down (CKD) models. If Skoda decides against participating in the policy, it may start its EV operations on a smaller scale, focusing primarily on the Enyaq.
The Skoda Enyaq iV, built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, has already made an impression in the global market. This platform also underpins the Volkswagen ID.4 and Audi Q4 e-tron. The Enyaq measures 4,648mm in length and 1,877mm in width, making it slightly smaller than the Skoda Kodiaq but designed as a two-row SUV. The Enyaq iV 80x, likely the variant to be introduced in India, features a 77kWh battery and dual motors, providing all-wheel drive (AWD) capabilities with a total output of 265hp. It supports 125kW DC fast charging and offers a range of up to 513km (WLTP) on a single charge.
The Skoda Elroq, although yet to be officially revealed, promises to be a game-changer in Skoda’s EV lineup. Expected to be approximately 4.2 meters long, the Elroq will be the first model to showcase Skoda’s new Modern Solid design language. The Elroq will be available in four variants: Elroq 50, 60, 85, and 85x. These models will feature varying battery capacities and power outputs ranging from 168hp to 295hp. The Elroq will offer three battery pack options—55kWh, 63kWh, and 82kWh—with both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and AWD configurations. The top variants will boast a range of over 560km, making it a formidable competitor in the electric SUV market.
