On December 9, 2025, the brand's new 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine will power the eagerly awaited petrol versions of the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari in India.
The new engine, which is part of Tata's larger plan to boost appeal in the petrol-SUV market, produces about 165bhp and 280 Nm of torque. It is anticipated to be available with manual and automatic transmissions.
The Harrier and Safari were only offered with diesel engines up to this point, which limited their market appeal to consumers who preferred gasoline. According to Tata Motors, the petrol versions will go on sale on December 09, 2025.
The new engine, which debuted at the Auto Expo 2023, is a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder, direct-injection turbo-petrol engine that belongs to the "Hyperion" or TGDi family.
Performance numbers show 280 Nm of torque and about 165 bhp with either an automated or six-speed manual transmission (the precise gearbox's tuning is still being finalized).
Due to reduced operating expenses, a better ride, and less worry about regulatory constraints (particularly in metropolitan areas), many Indian consumers favor petrol over diesel. The Harrier and Safari will be able to draw in more customers if they have a gasoline option.
There are currently a lot of competitors in the mid-to-large SUV market that have gasoline or hybrid engines. Tata strengthens its competitiveness by introducing a petrol option.
Reports indicate that the petrol versions will be priced marginally lower than the diesel counterparts, even if the prices have not yet been disclosed. Buyers may find it easier to enter the market as a result.
Tata will provide the precise cost of each version of the petrol Harrier and Safari at the time of launch.
It's still unclear whether the automatic transmission is dual-clutch or a torque-converter unit.
In comparison to current diesel models, would the petrol versions have any new features or specifications?
Whether current orders for diesel versions will permit a transition to petrol, and whether the petrol versions are available at all dealerships.
The December 09 introduction represents a significant new choice for consumers interested in the Harrier or Safari: petrol power for these cars. This could be a wise option for people who prefer gasoline-powered SUVs without sacrificing size, comfort, or status if the features, performance, and cost are all in line. Later this year, Tata will make detailed pricing and variant announcements.
