New Traffic e-Challan Fraud: Here's How to Identify Scam Messages and Avoid Getting Duped
The Information Security Awareness (ISEA) by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued an advisory about a fake traffic e-challan scam. Here's how you can identify scam messages and avoid getting duped.
Scammers send a message designed to look like an official traffic e-challan notification, urging recipients to click on a malicious link to pay for the fine. The fraudulent message might read something like this:
"Your Challan No. is … for vehicle number… having challan amount as Rs 500. For online payment of e-challan visit https://echallanparivahan.in/, you can also contact the RTO office for the disposal of the challan, Regards, RTO."
When you click on this payment link, you end up paying the cybercriminals instead of the police.
The fraudsters meticulously copy the format used by traffic authorities, making the message look real at first glance. However, with careful examination, you can spot the trap. Here's how:
Check if the vehicle number quoted in the message matches your vehicle number. You can easily verify this by referring to the number plate of your vehicle or the smart card (blue book) issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO).
Legitimate e-challan websites typically end with a ".gov.in" domain extension. Be wary of links with different extensions or suspicious URLs.
If you're unsure about the authenticity of a message, contact your local traffic authority directly through their official website or phone number to inquire about any outstanding violations.
Do not click on links or download attachments from unsolicited emails or texts claiming you have an e-challan, especially if they appear urgent or threatening.
If you have a genuine e-challan, make the payment through the official website of your local traffic authority or authorized payment gateways.
By staying vigilant and following these tips, you can protect yourself from falling victim to traffic e-challan scams. Always verify the authenticity of messages, links, and apps before providing any personal information or making payments.
