New Tesla Roadster Revealed: Rocket Variant Claims 0–96 km/h in Under 1 Second
  • Tesla has shown three Roadster versions: Performance, Thrust and Rocket, with the last featuring cold-gas thrusters designed for brief airborne manoeuvres.

  • The Rocket version claims 0–96 km/h acceleration in under 0.59 seconds, while production is targeted for 2028.

Nearly nine years after its 2017 unveiling, Tesla has showcased an updated Roadster concept featuring suction fans and SpaceX-inspired cold-gas thrusters. During a live webcast presentation, the company showcased simulated demonstrations of inverted driving, a controlled airborne flip and a barrel roll to illustrate the car's theoretical capabilities.

Separately, Tesla claims the top-tier Rocket version can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 0.59 seconds, a staggering figure that has yet to be independently tested or verified on a production-ready model.

The Three Variants: Performance, Thrust and Rocket

The new Tesla Roadster lineup includes three variants with different performance features:

Aerospace-Inspired Design and Thruster Technology

The new Roadster's design takes inspiration from aircraft such as the SR-71 Blackbird and F-35 Lightning II. It features an angular body, gold-tinted glass, flush lighting and titanium accents. The rear wing deploys in track mode to increase downforce

The Rocket version uses compressed gas released through directional nozzles to generate additional thrust. Tesla says this system can provide upward and forward movement, as well as controlled rotations. However, details about the system's force output and airborne performance have yet to be independently verified.

Specifications and Production Timeline

Tesla has not yet disclosed key production details, including battery capacity, motor output and the car's kerb weight. The duration and conditions of any airborne manoeuvres also remain unclear.

Production is targeted for 2028, although final specifications and delivery dates are yet to be confirmed. More details from Tesla and independent performance testing will help establish what buyers can expect from the production model.
