The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art multilevel automated car park in Punjabi Bagh, west Delhi, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion around the Outer Ring Road-Rohtak Road intersection. With a capacity for 276 cars, the facility will incorporate a commercial complex component and is anticipated to be operational within two years.
Scheduled to be developed on a shuttle-type parking system, the project seeks to optimize space efficiency while offering a swift and convenient parking experience. This innovative approach is expected to address the persistent issue of traffic snarls exacerbated by visitors to Bharat Darshan Park and various banquet halls in the vicinity.
The initiative forms part of MCD's broader strategy to enhance parking infrastructure in Punjabi Bagh, as previously reported by HT on June 8, 2022, outlining plans for three parking lots accommodating a total of 689 cars.
The latest endeavour, announced on March 15, involves the development of an automated car park spanning a 2,300sqm plot along Club Road near the local community centre near Madipur. Operating on a public-private partnership model, the project will grant a private developer a concession period of 30 years, enabling revenue generation through the commercial complex component.
Describing the project, a senior MCD official highlighted the advantages of the automated shuttle-type parking system, citing its ability to accommodate a larger number of vehicles in a compact space while ensuring expedited assembly and cost efficiency. The construction timeline for the commercial complex, integrated with the multilevel parking facility, is estimated at approximately two years.
The proposed shuttle system will facilitate both horizontal and vertical movement of platforms carrying vehicles, optimizing the utilization of available space.
In adherence to regulatory guidelines, the redevelopment of the 2,300sqm plot will adhere to a permissible ground coverage limit of 50%, resulting in the redevelopment of 1,150sqm. The MCD has stipulated a minimum upfront payment of ₹5 crore, along with a minimum annual recurring fee of ₹50 lakh.
Acknowledging the pressing need for enhanced parking infrastructure, resident Charan Singh Yadav emphasized the importance of cracking down on unauthorized roadside parking while welcoming the development of new parking facilities.
In addition to the Punjabi Bagh project, MCD is spearheading the construction of other car parks in the area, including a five-storey puzzle car parking system at the municipal crematorium and a six-storey parking lot at the Bharat Darshan Park. These initiatives underscore MCD's commitment to addressing parking challenges and enhancing urban mobility in Delhi's bustling neighbourhoods.
