MG & Volkswagen To Challenge Toyota Fortuner's Dominance With New Premium SUVs In 2025
The Toyota Fortuner has long reigned supreme in India's full-size SUV segment, establishing itself as the benchmark for premium SUVs in the country. However, its unchallenged dominance is about to face serious competition as two automotive giants prepare to enter the arena.
JSW MG Motor India and Volkswagen are gearing up to launch their contenders – the Majestor and Tayron – aimed squarely at dethroning the king.
The MG Majestor, essentially an updated and sportier version of the Gloster, is scheduled to arrive in showrooms within the coming weeks. Based on what we know about the global-spec D90 Max (which serves as its foundation), the Majestor could potentially be larger than its predecessor, though the wheelbase will remain unchanged at 2,950mm.
MG has given the Majestor a comprehensive visual refresh to distinguish it from the Gloster.
Key exterior enhancements include:
A redesigned front grille with a bolder presence
New, more aggressive headlamp clusters
Distinctive LED DRL signatures for a modern look
Revised front and rear bumpers with sportier styling
New connected LED taillamps that enhance the premium appearance
The cabin receives significant upgrades to match its upmarket positioning:
A new free-floating infotainment unit for improved visibility and access
Completely redesigned digital instrument cluster with enhanced functionality

Under the hood, the MG Majestor will retain the trusted 2.0L turbo diesel engine from the Gloster, paired with an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
The engine will be offered in two configurations:
Single-turbo variant: 163 bhp power output with 375 Nm of torque
Twin-turbo variant: 218 bhp power output with 480 Nm of torque
The twin-turbo version will come equipped with a capable 4X4 system, reinforcing its credentials as a genuine off-road capable premium SUV.
While Volkswagen hasn't officially confirmed the Tayron for the Indian market, recent sightings of test mules have fueled strong speculation about its launch.
Expected to arrive in late 2025, the Tayron will serve as the spiritual successor to the discontinued Tiguan Allspace, offering a premium 7-seater option in Volkswagen's SUV lineup.
The Volkswagen Tayron will share several design elements and features with the Tiguan R Line, maintaining VW's distinctive, clean and sophisticated aesthetic.

The India-spec Volkswagen Tayron is likely to feature a 2.0L turbo petrol engine mated to a refined 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. This powertrain combination is expected to generate:
Maximum power output of 204 bhp
Peak torque of 320Nm
The Tayron will be brought to India as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit, allowing Volkswagen to position it competitively against the Toyota Fortuner while maintaining its premium appeal.
With these two formidable contenders entering the premium SUV segment, consumers can expect a more diverse range of options beyond the Toyota Fortuner.
