Mercedes G-Class Electric vs G 63: What are the Differences?
Mercedes-Benz has launched the G 580, the all-electric version of the iconic G-Class, at ₹3 crore (ex-showroom). Though it may retain the classic visual appeal of the G 63, new forward propulsion is certainly different in the form of the quad electric motor set-up and loaded with updated options. The comparison below takes a look at design, interiors, powertrain, off-road stats, and pricing for the G 580 and G 63.
Design: Classic G-Class with Modern Twists
The front of the models makes it difficult to distinguish between the G 580 and the G 63. The key thing that remains true to the ears, however, is the classical G-Class silhouette.
Few distinctions, though, can be observed: a slightly raised bonnet, air intake areas for the purpose of aerodynamics, and two truly beautiful, looking-like-they-love-sun alloy wheel designs (20-inch for G 580, 22-inch for G 63). In addition, an electric model is arriving with badges reserved for the power set-up and G 63 BLA-BAM-Type AMG grille and bumpers.
Other features of the G-Class design remain free for the inclusion of substantial amounts of inputs; the round headlight and a welcoming spare wheel at the back remain on both cars.
Interiors: Same Luxury, Different Switchgear
Inside, too, is similarly identical: dual screens, turbine-inspired AC vents and grab handles. The sporty thing inside is the steering wheel of an AMG spec in the G 63. This, however is not the interesting difference; what the G 580 has done inside is replace those differential lock buttons on the side of the console with controls to activate its specific G-Turn and G-Steering modes.
Powertrain: Electric Efficiency vs V8 Power
Specification | G 580 | G 63 |
---|---|---|
Powertrain | Quad electric motors | 4.0L twin-turbo V8 |
Power | 587hp | 585hp (+22hp mild-hybrid) |
Torque | 1,164Nm | 850Nm |
Gearbox | 2-speed gearbox with low range | 9-speed DCT |
Battery | 116kWh | N/A |
0-100kph | 4.7 seconds | 4.4 seconds |
Top Speed | 180kph | 220kph |
The G 63 screams with a twin-turbo V8, delivering a raw and thrilling drive. In contrast, the G 580's electric motors provide massive torque and allow for high-tech off-road features, such as a crawl function and torque vectoring.
Off-Road Capabilities: Modern Tech vs Traditional Engineering
Specification | G 580 | G 63 |
---|---|---|
Approach Angle | 32.6 degrees | 31 degrees |
Departure Angle | 31.1 degrees | 30 degrees |
Breakover Angle | 20.8 degrees | 26 degrees |
Water Wading | 850mm | 700mm |
The G 580's torque vectoring and G-Turn features redefine off-road performance, allowing it to pivot in place and navigate extreme conditions. It even outdoes the G 63 in water-wading capacity, thanks to its innovative battery design. But the G 63's mechanical differential locks are a favorite among old-school off-road enthusiasts.
Price: A Surprising Advantage
Model | Ex-showroom Price |
---|---|
G 580 | ₹3.00 crore |
G 63 | ₹3.64 crore |
This G 580 has several advantages compared to the ICE. Primarily, it is significantly cheaper. It is much heavier and offers slightly less top speed, yet the electric G-Class does offer innovation and uniqueness that can appeal to a modern luxury SUV buyer.
Both of them, the Mercedes G 580 and G 63, carry the G-Class legacy but in a different flavor according to personal taste. The G 63 offers the traditional V8 fun, whereas the G 580 is off-road luxury for tomorrow with innovative electric technology. Whichever you choose: pure power or eco-friendly efficiency, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class remains the epitome of style and attraction.
