Mercedes EQS to Be Replaced by S-Class Electric for Next Generation

The next-generation Mercedes S-Class and EQS sedans will be merged into a single model lineup, rather than existing as separate vehicles. This strategic move is aimed at reducing the disparity between the internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) versions and addressing the declining sales of both models.

Unified S-Class Lineup

The next-gen S-Class, expected to debut in 2030, will be available in both ICE and EV variants. According to Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius, the EQS name, which was introduced for the brand’s flagship electric sedan in 2021, will be phased out. “There will be two S-Classes in the future – ICE and electric,” Källenius told Autocar UK, noting that both versions will share similar exterior and interior designs.

Different Platforms, Similar Designs

Despite sharing design similarities, the ICE and EV versions of the new S-Class are expected to be built on different platforms. The S-Class electric model and the next-gen EQE are likely to be based on Mercedes' upcoming MB.EA Large EV platform, while the S-Class ICE version will utilize an updated iteration of the current MRA platform.

Addressing Declining Sales

This unification comes in response to significant drops in sales for both the S-Class and EQS models. S-Class sales fell by 37 percent in the first quarter of this year. Furthermore, Mercedes’ projection that EVs would make up more than 20 percent of its global sales in 2023 fell short by 9 percent, despite a 73 percent year-over-year increase in EV sales.

Future-Proofing Mercedes’ Lineup

Mercedes has recently postponed its goal of achieving a 50 percent EV (including plug-in hybrids) share of sales from 2025 to 2030. Additionally, the automaker has rolled back its plans to become an EV-only brand by 2030, opting instead to extend the lifespan of key ICE models. This includes investing in the electrification of existing engines to meet regulatory requirements for emissions and other factors "well into the 2030s."

Currently, the Mercedes EQS is priced at Rs 1.62 crore, while the S-Class ranges from Rs 1.77 crore to Rs 1.86 crore. Mercedes also offers an SUV version of the EQS internationally, which is set to launch in India in a Maybach variant on September 5.
