The Maruti Fronx, a compact SUV based on the Baleno, has reached a significant milestone by surpassing 2 lakh-unit sales in India. Sold through Maruti Suzuki’s premium Nexa outlet, the Fronx was launched on April 24, 2023, and achieved this feat in just 17 months by mid-September 2024. This milestone reflects the model's increasing popularity, having reached 1,00,000 units in just 10 months and 1,50,000 units in 14 months.
According to SIAM’s wholesales data, the Fronx sold 1,34,735 units in FY2024, with an average of 11,228 units per month. From April to August 2024, the compact SUV sold 59,967 units, marking a 15% year-on-year growth. This strong sales performance places the Fronx in fifth place among the Top 20 utility vehicles (UVs) in the first five months of FY2025, further solidifying its position in the competitive SUV market.
The Fronx has become the fastest Nexa SUV to cross the 2 lakh sales mark, achieving this milestone five months sooner than the Maruti Grand Vitara. This accomplishment underlines the Fronx’s growing significance in Maruti Suzuki’s overall sales strategy.
The Fronx plays a pivotal role in Maruti Suzuki’s success in the utility vehicle segment, where the company currently holds a 25.55% market share in the first five months of FY2025. Of Maruti's seven UVs, three models have shown a year-on-year increase in sales: the Brezza (up 17%), the Ertiga (up 52%), and the Fronx (up 15%).
While the Grand Vitara saw a 5% decline in sales with 45,484 units sold, the Fronx’s consistent performance makes it the second best-selling Nexa SUV, following closely behind the Grand Vitara. In FY2024, the Fronx was also the second best-selling model in Nexa's portfolio after the Baleno, which sold 1,95,607 units.
The Fronx competes with models like the Tata Punch, Hyundai Exter, Citroen C3, and the recently launched Toyota Taisor, a rebadged version of the Fronx produced by Maruti Suzuki for Toyota. The Toyota Taisor has sold 11,218 units within four months of its launch.
Of the total 6,99,252 units sold through the Nexa channel between April and August 2024, the Fronx accounted for 8.57% of the share, while the Baleno made up 9% and the Grand Vitara contributed 6.50%.
With its strong sales performance and competitive positioning, the Maruti Fronx continues to play a crucial role in Maruti Suzuki’s utility vehicle strategy in India, and its future sales trajectory looks promising.
