Maruti e Vitara EV Set for Japan Export: A Big Leap for India’s EV Dreams
In a major boost for India's position in the global electric vehicles (EV) market, Maruti Suzuki will export the first electric vehicle made in India, e Vitara, from India to Japan. It is slated for domestic market launch in September 2025.
The e Vitara produced in India will come from Suzuki's facility in Gujarat and further solidifies India's position as a dominant player in the global EV manufacturing space.
The e Vitara becomes the fourth Maruti model made in India, exported to Japan following the Fronx, Baleno and the five-door Jimny (also known as Jimny Nomad in Japan). The Jimny Nomad has enjoyed considerable demand in Japan, evidenced by its current two-year waiting period.
Japan is one of the top five export markets for Maruti Suzuki, and the addition of the e Vitara is a strategic move to intensify focus on growing its electric portfolio in overseas markets, especially those with high automotive quality standards.
The e Vitara was showcased at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025 and marks Maruti Suzuki’s formal dedication to advancing the electric vehicle space. It will be available in three variants with two battery pack options, and the company will cater for a wide consumer demand.
Though complete specifications are yet be revealed, initial specifications indicate charge times will be competitive, and the 0 to 100 kmph acceleration time is noteworthy, both will be significant selling points in this rapidly growing EV segment.
The e Vitara will be the flagship for Suzuki’s EV roadmap, which will also include future electric variants of the Fronx, Jimny, and Wagon R. The success of the e Vitara in domestic and international markets will dictate how quickly these other models arrive.
As Maruti Suzuki proceeds carefully, yet firmly, into the EV future, the e Vitara’s export to Japan begins what has the potential to be a transformative decade for India’s EV sector.
