Mahindra & Mahindra is preparing to expand its presence in India’s electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of its first fully electric coupe SUV, the XUV.e9, set to arrive in April 2025. This new model, recently spotted testing in camouflage, is the second in Mahindra’s upcoming line of Born Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and will follow the launch of the XUV.e8 expected later this year. The XUV.e9 marks Mahindra’s debut on its newly developed INGLO platform, designed exclusively for EVs and incorporating advanced features geared toward India’s rapidly evolving EV segment.
Based on the INGLO platform, the XUV.e9 is positioned as a coupe-style SUV, distinguished by a sportier stance and sleek contours. Expected to offer a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) in at least one variant, the XUV.e9 is estimated to have a driving range of up to 500 kilometers per charge. The coupe SUV styling aligns it with global trends, providing a more aerodynamic and futuristic look than its traditional counterparts. This architecture also allows for better battery placement and weight distribution, resulting in an optimized driving experience and enhanced range.
What truly sets the XUV.e9 apart from Mahindra’s current lineup are the technological advancements that will make their debut in this model. Key features include a heads-up display (HUD) with augmented reality integration, aimed at enhancing driver awareness and interactivity. Mahindra has also collaborated with famed composer AR Rahman to create a unique EV sound package, giving the vehicle a distinct acoustic signature to enhance the EV driving experience.
Additionally, the XUV.e9 is expected to come equipped with a new EV-specific connected car suite, offering advanced remote control and monitoring capabilities, tailored specifically for electric vehicles. This feature could provide insights into real-time battery health, navigation to nearby charging stations, and energy consumption data, significantly improving the owner’s experience and interaction with their vehicle.
The XUV.e9 is entering a competitive market at a time when D-segment EVs are poised to become highly popular. With strong competitors like the Tata Curvv EV and Tata Harrier EV, as well as upcoming entrants such as the Maruti eVX, Honda Elevate EV, Toyota Urban Sport, and MG ZS EV, Mahindra’s XUV.e9 will face a range of rival offerings. Given these competitive dynamics, Mahindra has focused on making the XUV.e9 a unique value proposition, backed by technology, design, and range capabilities.
Mahindra is heavily invested in the success of the XUV.e9 as a flagship model in its BEV lineup. With its ambitious design, features, and long-range capability, the XUV.e9 is positioned as Mahindra’s formidable entry into the electric SUV market and represents a major milestone in its drive to electrify its portfolio by 2025.
