Lok Adalat September 13, 2025: Traffic Challan Waiver Guide

Mark your calendars - the next National Lok Adalat will be on September 13, 2025, the date on which the vehicle owners in India will be able to pay outstanding traffic challans at a negotiable amount (in some cases). This measure is set to relieve the citizens and the judiciary of minor infractions that are in a backlog. A lot of fines will be cut by half or even annulled, depending on the type of offence.

Violations that qualify

Lok Adalat will mainly concern minor e-challans. Cases to be waived or reduced in terms of fines include:

  • Driving without a seat belt

  • Riding without a helmet

  • Jumping a red light

  • Wrongly issued challan

  • Over-speeding

  • Missing PUC certificate

  • Wrong parking

  • Driving without a licence or fitness certificate

  • Driving in the wrong lane

  • Ignoring traffic signs

  • Driving without a number plate

These crimes, despite being prevalent, are a major contributor to the case backlogs and therefore their inclusion is a major relief to the motorists.

Challans Not Covered

Not every offence will be qualifying. The lok adalat will not see serious cases like drunk driving, hit-and-run cases, death due to negligent driving, driving by a minor, unauthorized racing, use of a vehicle in crime, or challans already in a court of law. The cases issued in other states are not excluded as well.

Registration Process

The participation is obligatory online registration with the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) site. Once the application form has been filled and documents uploaded, the applicants will be issued with a token number and appointment letter, the time and date of appearance.

During the hearing day, one is supposed to bring the token, appointment letter, vehicle documents, and challan information, and it is recommended that one should be at the office an hour ahead of the provided schedule.

Dependence on local arrangements, walk-in benches may be established at some centres to directly deal with pending challans.

Other Cases Heard

Other than traffic challans, Lok Adalats also resolve civil cases e.g., family disputes, property disputes and minor court cases, and simplify, non-adversarial settlement of long pending cases.
