Kia Syros – Short Wheelbase and New Design Reinvents Compact SUVs with Comfortable Family Closer

Kia Syros: A Bold Move for Space and Practicality

Carmaker Kia Motors has just presented its brand new compact SUV called Kia Syros, a major milestone in the evolution of the category. Intended to be a stylish functional car with emphasis on internal space rather than Onyx’s sleek lines, the Syros should appeal to families in India who do not share the European's love of overt body curves.

Even Kia India’s MD and CEO, Gwanggu Lee during the global debut also provided this reason by saying, “People may ignore the radical design for a spacious cabin.”

Maximizing Space with Tall-Boy Design Philosophy

The Syros builds upon the tall-boy design philosophy, reminiscent of successes like the Hyundai Santro and Maruti Suzuki Wagon R. Measuring 3,995mm in length, 1,800mm in width, and 1,665mm in height, the Syros is 55mm taller and 10mm wider than its sibling, the Kia Sonet.

Its 50mm longer wheelbase further enhances interior space, while a 465-litre boot capacity—20% larger than the Sonet’s—adds to its practicality.

This upright design ensures:

  • Ample Headroom: Perfect for taller passengers.

  • Easy Ingress and Egress: A family-friendly feature.

  • Airy Cabin Feel: Enhancing passenger comfort during long journeys.

The Syros successfully merges the tax benefits of sub-four-metre vehicles with class-leading rear-seat space, rivaling even the larger Kia Seltos.

A Strategic Approach to Compact SUVs

Kang also mentioned Kia’s plan to enter India to target the compact SUV segment. Sitting between the Sonet and the Seltos, the Syros targets families who crave usability and comfort. Maxing the internal space, according to Lee, is more advantageous to families and children more than anything else. Customers must feel comfortable within the interior we have to create.

Premium Features and Technology

The Syros doesn’t compromise on technology and comfort, offering a host of premium features:

  • Dual 12.3-inch Displays: This for infotainment and instrumentations.

  • Reclining and Ventilated Rear Seats: Ensuring passenger comfort.

  • Panoramic Sunroof: Adding to the premium feel.

  • Level 2 ADAS: Improving vehicle safety and help in driving.

  • Dual Dashcams: Its forms correspond to the modern requirements for protective equipment.

Diesel and EV Options: A Rare Offering

Whereas most compact SUVs, the Syros will specifically target long-distance drivers who need a car with efficiency and Torque will come from a diesel engine.

Moreover, Kia motors include an all-electric variant called the Syros to diversify the automobile market, in future.

Syros’ Positioning in the Indian Market

In general, Lee stated the Syros can be defined as a family-oriented compact SUV to fit into the Kia vehicle lineup. The Sonet is designed for individual customers, while the Syros is for families as it provides space as people grow.

The Syros is an explorer compact SUV that boasts of its unique styling coupled with the tall-boy utility that it brings in the packaging along with a gagged-up features list. But, its success will heavily depend on the price strategy, which is yet to be revealed by the company.
