The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is struggling with many difficulties, there is already a piece of information about the Bombay High Court’s order to the government to control the pollution by reducing the number of diesel vehicles in the MMR. Mumbai may see a ban on the use of older BS3 vehicles on public roads, similar to Delhi.
Increasing AQI in the city
This action was taken in response to the Bombay High Court's concerns regarding Mumbai's growing pollution and traffic jams. The court urged the government to take the required steps to reduce the number of vehicles and pollution in Mumbai, pointing out that vehicle emissions had made the AQI worse.
Nevertheless, the newly established committee is now investigating whether it is suitable or practical to phase out petrol-powered and diesel-powered vehicles in the city. To put it briefly, the government is eager to enforce a citywide ban on cars that run on petrol or diesel.
The Challenges
Over 2 lakh new cars are put on the road each year, and there are already 48 lakh vehicles registered at four RTOs in Mumbai. Furthermore, according to an official, Maharashtra's registered car count is expected to reach six crore by 2030 and most possibly 15 crore by 2035. However, it will be challenging for the government to manage traffic and pollution, which may make it challenging to phase out vehicles in the near future.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this step might be a question for many of the petrol vehicle owners and would be looking for a clear answer from the government. The government has taken this step in favor of the increasing AQI which is harmful to the people and would roll out some bankable solutions very soon.
