Dehradun's Transport Department Embraces Digital Solutions

The Dehradun Transport Department is taking significant steps to modernize the city's transportation infrastructure. A new public transport mobile application is in development, designed to provide real-time tracking of buses, route information, and other essential services to commuters. This app aims to improve the reliability and convenience of public transportation in the city.

In addition to the mobile app, the department plans to implement a digital token system at RTOs. This system will allow citizens to book appointments online, reducing wait times and streamlining various services such as vehicle registration and driver's license issuance. The initiative is part of a broader effort to digitize government services and enhance user experience.

Addressing Traffic Congestion and Unauthorized Activities

To alleviate traffic congestion, the department is identifying underutilized basement areas in commercial complexes that can be repurposed for parking. This strategy aims to increase parking availability and reduce illegal on-street parking, which often contributes to traffic jams.

Furthermore, the department is cracking down on unauthorized roadside mechanics whose activities obstruct traffic flow. Enforcement actions will be taken against those operating without proper authorization, ensuring that public roadways remain clear and safe for all users.

Enhancing Public Transport Infrastructure

Plans are underway to improve public transport facilities at key locations, including the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) and major intersections. Designated stoppage points will be established to organize the boarding and alighting of passengers, thereby improving traffic flow and commuter safety.

Vehicles will be equipped with Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTDs) to monitor adherence to assigned routes. Operators deviating from their designated paths will face penalties, ensuring that public transport services remain reliable and efficient.

Regulatory Measures for Vehicle Registration and Sales

To prevent the monopolization of desirable vehicle registration numbers, the department is collaborating with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to develop a system that restricts the hoarding of "fancy" numbers. This measure will ensure fair access to preferred registration numbers for all citizens.

Additionally, the department is enforcing regulations on the sale of second-hand vehicles. Dealers operating without the necessary licenses will be identified through surveys and issued notices. Non-compliant businesses will face closure if they fail to obtain the required licenses within a stipulated timeframe.

Streamlining Driving License Testing and Enforcement

Residents seeking permanent two-wheeler driving licenses will no longer need to travel to Jhajra for testing. The RTO office in Dehradun will now conduct these tests, making the process more accessible.

For drivers whose vehicles have been seized due to violations, counseling sessions will be provided to promote safer driving practices. In cases of reckless driving, authorities may conduct home visits to seize vehicles, and footage of such enforcement actions may be shared on social media platforms to raise public awareness.
