Chandigarh Issues 96 Traffic Challans Every Hour
Statistics gained with the help of an RTI have shown that Chandigarh Traffic Police has issued 1,02,222 challans between July and August 20, 2025. Among these, 84,204 were issued automatically through the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), and 18,018 were distributed manually by some personnel on the road. This is more than 82 per cent of the total number of challans that were a result of CCTV cameras.
The number of challans in July alone was 71,655--the greatest during this time. These included 54,857 on CCTV surveillance and 16,798 by hand. The busiest day was July 27, when a record 2,705 challans were issued. However, 2,292 of these were of CCTV, and only 413 of them were given by traffic people.
The August period, however, began with a total of 30,567 challenges during the first 20 days of August, of which 29,347 were taken by cameras and 1,220 were by hand. The peak number of 2,079 challenged in August was on August 10.
As per Sumer Pratap Singh, the SSP (Traffic), said that red light jumping, overspeeding, and crossing the zebra are some of the violations that are directly detected by the CCTV cameras. In other visible offences, the traffic police officials give out the challans on the spot after due legal process.
The SSP further added that the fall in the number of manual challans was also an active attempt by the Chandigarh Traffic Police to establish closer relations with the citizens. Traffic personnel are being trained to approach people in a more approachable manner as they create awareness of road rules instead of just punishing people.
Chandigarh now has an average of almost 2,300 challans being issued per day, that is, 96 per hour. As CCTV-supported ITMS fuel much of this crackdown, the city will soon shift to a more technologically empowered, open, and efficient traffic management system.
