BMW 1 Series Design Patented in India: A Possible Return?

BMW's 1 Series may return to India after 8 years.

BMW has recently secured a design patent for its 1 Series hatchback in India, sparking speculation about the model's return after an eight-year absence.

The 1 Series, once BMW's most affordable offering in the Indian market, was discontinued due to lackluster sales.

This new development suggests that BMW might be considering reintroducing the hatchback to Indian consumers.

The Evolution of the BMW 1 Series

Design and Features

The fourth-generation 1 Series, unveiled globally in June 2024, retains the core structure of its predecessor but boasts significant design enhancements.

The front fascia has been revamped with a more streamlined kidney grille, reminiscent of the updated 3 Series, and sleeker headlight units. These changes contribute to a more angular and modern appearance.

The sides feature subtle refinements, while the rear is updated with new tail lights and a redesigned bumper. The M Sport variant offers a sportier aesthetic compared to the standard model.

Interior Upgrades

Inside, the 1 Series is equipped with BMW's 20-inch Curved Display, integrating a 10.7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.3-inch infotainment system powered by BMW's OS 9 software. The traditional circular iDrive controller has been removed, and physical buttons are minimized, with functions like climate control now managed through the infotainment system.

Engine Options

Internationally, the 1 Series offers a range of 48V mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines. Petrol variants include the 170hp 120 and the 300hp M135 xDrive, while diesel options feature the 150hp 118d and 163hp 120d.

BMW's History in the Indian Market

Previous Presence

BMW introduced the second-generation 1 Series in India but discontinued it in 2017 due to poor sales. The model featured a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration with 1.6-litre turbo-petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines.

Potential Comeback

The recent design patent filing indicates that BMW is contemplating reintroducing the 1 Series in India, marking a potential return after an eight-year hiatus.

The BMW Skytop Roadster

Design and Features

Alongside the 1 Series, BMW has patented the design of the Skytop roadster in India.

Based on the 8 Series, this limited-production convertible draws inspiration from the Z8 and features ultra-thin LED headlights, prominent bonnet vents, and a distinctive central divider on the boot that forms a subtle spoiler.

The interior is adorned with brown leather and incorporates the latest generation of BMW's iDrive infotainment system.

Production Plans

BMW plans to produce only 50 units of the Skytop roadster, each powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine.

Market Implications

Consumer Interest

The design patent filings for both the 1 Series and the Skytop roadster suggest that BMW is evaluating the Indian market's interest in these models.

The reintroduction of the 1 Series could provide consumers with a premium hatchback option, while the Skytop roadster would cater to niche luxury convertible enthusiasts.

Competitive Landscape

If BMW proceeds with launching these models in India, it will face competition from other luxury car manufacturers offering similar products.

The success of the 1 Series and Skytop Roadster will depend on factors such as pricing, features, and consumer demand.

In the end, BMW's recent design patent filings in India for the 1 Series and Skytop roadster indicate a potential expansion of its model lineup in the country.

The possible return of the 1 Series after eight years could offer Indian consumers a renewed premium hatchback option, while the limited-edition Skytop roadster would appeal to luxury convertible aficionados.

As BMW evaluates the Indian market, enthusiasts and potential buyers await further announcements regarding these models.
