The year 2025 will be a watershed year for the Indian automotive sector, with electric vehicles (EVs) assuming the limelight.
Top carmakers such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra, and MG are preparing to launch a fleet of new EVs to meet the rising demand for green mobility. With improvements in battery technology, rising charging infrastructure, and government incentives, adoption of EVs will pick up steam.
From small city-centric EVs to loaded-up SUVs, these new releases will define electric mobility in the years to come in India.
Let's peep into what these top-tier OEMs have lined up for 2025.
Maruti e Vitara
The official launch date of the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara is yet to be announced. However, it’s likely to go on sale in April 2025. It will be Maruti Suzuki’s answer to the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, and MG ZS EV. This electric SUV is based on the Heartect-e skateboard platform, co-developed with Toyota.
The automaker has announced that the e-Vitara will be equipped with the 49kWh and 61kWh battery packs, both mated with the front-axle mounted 143bhp and 173bhp electric motors. The higher-capacity battery pack version of the SUV will ensure an MIDC range of more than 500km.
MG Windsor Long Range
MG Windsor EV is currently leading the Indian electric vehicle space. To further drive its sales, the automaker will launch the Windsor Long-Range version in April 2025. It's expected to come with a 50kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which promises more than 450km range.
The same powertrain works in the worldwide-retailed MG ZS EV. This battery pack is charged from 0 to 80 percent in 46 minutes using a 50kW DC fast charger and 6 hours using an ordinary AC charger. The new, larger battery pack may be available only on the highest trim.
Tata Harrier EV
The Tata Harrier EV prices will be announced in the next few months, maybe in May or June.
Based on the Acti.EV platform, this electric SUV is expected to be available with several battery options and an AWD drivetrain system.
Previously, Tata announced that the Harrier EV would deliver a peak torque of 500 Nm and a range of more than 500km. The recent teasers reveal the floating touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, and a four-spoke steering wheel like the ICE-powered Harrier. The info unit and instrument will most likely have EV-specific graphics.
Mahindra XEV 7e
The Mahindra XEV 7e (electric XUV700) is perhaps the most anticipated new electric vehicle to come to India later in 2025. The EV will have most of the design elements and features carried over from the ICE version but also take some cues from the XEV 9e.
It's expected to come with 59kWh and 79kWh battery packs, promising a claimed MIDC range of 542km and 656km, respectively. The upper trim of the EV may receive the optional AWD system.
Conclusion
2025 is going to be a year that will change the game for the Indian EV market, with top players such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra, and MG spearheading the cause. With developments in battery technology, better charging infrastructure, and rising government incentives, electric vehicles are only going to grow more affordable and desirable for consumers in India. From small city EVs to heavy-duty electric SUVs, these new launches will be instrumental in defining the destiny of eco-friendly mobility in India. As the auto sector tilts toward electric vehicles, consumers can expect a thrilling lineup of options that guarantee efficiency, performance, and innovation.
