BYD, a leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, continues to expand its footprint in India with exciting developments. Following positive responses to its electric models like the Atto 3, eMAX 7, and the imported BYD Seal, the company has now patented two new EV models in India: the Bao 9 sports car and the Bao 3 SUV. These patents, recently approved by India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, showcase BYD’s plans to diversify its portfolio in the Indian passenger vehicle market.
BYD Bao 3 SUV: A Rugged Off-Roader
The Bao 3 SUV is inspired by the Super 3 concept from BYD’s subsidiary brand Fang Cheng Bao, which specializes in performance-oriented vehicles for off-road and racing enthusiasts.
Key features of the Bao 3 include:
Design: A rugged, off-road-ready aesthetic with chunky wheel arches, thick black claddings, high-profile tires, and a muscular front bumper. The upright front fascia includes a sealed black nose and sleek LED headlights.
Dimensions: Measuring 4,605 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, and 1,720 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,745 mm and a weight of over 2,150 kg.
Off-Road Credentials: Impressive approach and departure angles of 25° and 28°, respectively.
Performance: Equipped with dual electric motors (one on each axle) producing a combined output of 444 bhp, the SUV accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 201 km/h.
Battery Technology: Powered by BYD’s Blade cells, renowned for their efficiency and durability.
The patent images suggest that the Bao 3 might still be in the concept stage, as shown by additional design elements like load hooks on the bonnet.
BYD Bao 9 Sports Car: A Futuristic Speedster
The Bao 9 sports car, based on the Super 9 concept, is an open-top electric speedster designed for high performance and visual appeal.
Key highlights of the Bao 9:
Exterior Design: A sleek, curvy profile with scissor doors, dual LED taillights, and a distinctive rear spoiler.
Open-Top Design: A two-seater layout that emphasizes a sporty, minimalist aesthetic.
Conceptual Stage: Like the Bao 3, the patent indicates this model is still in its early design phase.
BYD's Vision for India
With these new patents, BYD is signaling its intent to strengthen its position in the Indian EV market by introducing advanced and performance-focused electric vehicles. The addition of the rugged Bao 3 and the sleek Bao 9 showcases the company’s ability to cater to a wide range of consumer preferences, from off-road enthusiasts to sports car aficionados.
As India’s EV market continues to grow, BYD’s innovative Blade battery technology and diverse model lineup could set the stage for greater adoption of electric vehicles in the country. These patents hint at an exciting future for BYD’s operations in India, as the company works to capture the imagination of Indian car buyers with cutting-edge designs and performance.
