Amritsar to Launch Online Challan System from January 26
The Punjab Government plans to implement the online challan system in four cities including Amritsar from January 26, 2025. The primary purpose of this measure is to increase effective performance in traffic laws and ensure the safety of traffic flows. Apart from Amritsar, the system will be started in other cities in Punjab including Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Mohali.
The e-challaning system will monitor traffic violations such as:
Jumping red lights.
Crossing zebra crossings improperly.
Over-speeding.
At the heart of this system are high-tech CCTV cameras installed at seven key intersections:
Sant Singh Sukha Singh Chowk.
Lawrence Road Chowk.
Crystal Chowk.
Canal Office Chowk.
Amandeep Hospital Chowk.
Session Chowk.
Ranjit Avenue T-point Chowk.
These cameras will record violations, detect the offender by number plate recognition, and generate challans which are delivered directly to the violator’s mobile number or home address. This approach is similar to the approach that was followed while introducing the system of e-challaning in Chandigarh.
The installation is embraced under the Smart City Project whereby 1,168 CCTV cameras have been placed in 409 different strategic places in Amritsar. The project also includes:
50 face detection cameras.
10 LED screens.
Fifty chowks in the local area will contain an alert service.
Centralized at a cost of ₹91 crore = Rs 91 million, the system functions under the Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) set effective October 2022.
According to Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, the system will:
Enhance traffic regulation.
Simplification of traffic offenders identification.
Enhance the standard and knowledge of the public.
The overall use of the e-challaning system is another productive step that leads to safe roads and the introduction of strong control over traffic in the city of Amritsar. By improving the roles of technology in police work the system is poised for further optimisation and effectiveness to enhance the traffic management system in Punjab.
