AI-enabled parking will soon replace the FASTag-based RFID parking system

Fascinatingly, this system is far more advanced than the conventional FASTag RFID technology now utilized for tolls and specific parking lots.

AI-enabled parking will soon replace the FASTag-based RFID parking system

Are you curious about how it will operate?

Instead of using RFID tags (the barcode on FASTag stickers, which are often on the windshield), its cameras at parking lots will record vehicle number plates. The associated FASTag account will then be instantly debited when AI converts these photos into numbers.

What is RFID?

The technology now utilized in FASTag to process parking or toll payments is called RFID, or radio frequency identification. Additionally, this technology communicates with tags affixed to items by using radio waves for identification.

How does this help?

NPCI chief Dilip Asbe shed further insight on the topic, saying, "We are looking at having the camera read the number plate and debit the FASTag instead of using the RFID system." That picture will be transformed into a number using AI. The proof of concept is currently being developed.

Intriguingly, this new system is already created for all pre-registered FASTag customers, and proof-of-concept is currently being conducted for both public and private parking lots throughout India.

The new method will leverage AI-powered Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and optical character recognition (OCR) to expedite parking transactions, in contrast to FASTag's existing usage of RFID to process toll payments as cars drive. They hope that this new implementation will assist to increase payment accuracy and lessen traffic. Identifying altered license plates will also aid in the prevention of fraud.

Conclusion

The transition from FASTag-based RFID parking to an AI-powered system marks a significant leap in parking payment technology. By leveraging Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and Optical Character Recognition (OCR), this innovation aims to enhance accuracy, reduce congestion, and prevent fraudulent activities. As NPCI continues to develop and refine this system, it holds the potential to revolutionize parking management across India, offering a seamless and efficient experience for vehicle owners.
