Double parking refers to the practice of parking your car parallel to a car already parked at the curb or in the garage. When you double park your vehicle, it obstructs the traffic and the car, which is legally parked next to yours.
Since finding a parking spot is not easy, more and more car owners resort to double parking. For example, imagine a car parked on the side of the road, and another car pulls up next to it and parks parallel to the parked car, blocking it from moving. This is double parking.
Another example would be a delivery truck parked in the middle of the road, obstructing the flow of traffic while the driver unloads packages onto the sidewalk. Double parking causes inconvenience to other drivers, creates traffic congestion, and can even lead to accidents.
The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, does not mention the term double parking. But it’s not permissible to double-park a car since it causes obstruction. Hence, double parking is considered illegal in India under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
It is classified as an offence and can result in a fine or penalty, as well as the towing of the vehicle. Double parking can lead to traffic congestion and can also be a safety hazard for other motorists and pedestrians. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid double parking and park vehicles in designated parking areas.
The traffic officer might penalise you or tow your vehicle under the charge of obstruction as per Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
