Most challans by state

The introduction of e-challans in India was made to not only make the process of issuing fines for not following laws easier, but it was also done to make fines more uniform in the hope that lawlessness would slowly yet surely creep out of our driving and riding etiquette. While we are well and truly on the way to achieving that final step, it has to be noted that the issuance of e-challans in certain states has been a lot more than some others.

According to government data, between September, 2019 and July, 2021, Uttar Pradesh has collected the maximum in terms of e-challans issued and fines collected (to the tune of Rs 545 crore). Next up was Bihar, with Rs 488 crore collected in fines, followed by Delhi (Rs 244 crore), and rounding out the top 5 was Haryana and Tamil Nadu. In Delhi, fines collected from traffic rule violations were nearly Rs 175 crore, which is 71% of the total fines collected by the traffic police and transport department. It also tops the charts in terms of e-challans issued (2 crore!).
