The new and updated Volvo S90 was launched in India in September 2022.

• It received newer feature additions and a rejigged powertrain and version option.

• With the latest update, the S90 got almost a lakh rupees more expensive in your pocket, but it offers many new features including BLIS (which's Volvo's blind-spot assist), automatic braking, adaptive cruise control and a premium Bowers & Wilkins set of 19 speaker music system. The updated version continues to offer an in-built Google-based infotainment system but gets more connectivity options as well.

• Feature update for the refreshed S90 also includes an advanced air-purifier, a 360-degree camera, which was absent before, and a new head-up display.

• The updated 2022 S90 now offers four exterior colour options which are - Crystal White, Platinum Grey, Onyx Black, and Denim Blue.

The S90 has established a unique style quotient for itself since its introduction in 2016. It was the first one to introduce the new Volvo design language that you now see on all modern Volvos. It stands out amongst other mid-size sedans and despite being around for close to a decade, the S90's design has aged like a fine wine.

• In terms of appearance, the updated S90 carries a low-slung stance and a classic characteristic three-box design. There are a few tweaks on the MY22 that include a chrome grille logo, a slightly reworked bumper design, and a fog lamp housing.

• The 2021 update for the S90 is subtle and you'd appreciate that Volvo has not fiddled much with the timeless design of this luxury sedan. You get a majestic-looking 18-inch multispoke dual-tone alloy wheel design here which goes well with the overall stance of the car. You can have the S90 in any one of the four colour options which include Denim Blue, Onyx Black, Bright Silver, and Crystal White.

• At the back, the LED tail lamps, which have become so iconic for the S90, get a slightly revised lighting signature. Even the bumpers are reworked and there are chrome inserts seen around the back. For the update, the exhaust pipes are now hidden away to lend the S90 an emission-free look.

Overall, the S90 continues to be a head-turner despite the design being eight years old. You are more likely to prefer the stately stance of the S90 over the German counterparts.

Similar to the exterior, the cabin of the S90 has aged quite gracefully. It has been one of the first to show us the minimalistic design approach.

• You will find fewer buttons inside this Volvo with high-quality materials used all around. All the fit and finish here is top notch and you'd love spending time on the seats of the S90.

• The seats upfront offer extreme comfort, whether you are commuting to work or driving cross country. It's draped in Nappa leather upholstery and offers electric adjustment with memory function and offers ventilation as well, so you are cool and comfortable despite spending long hours in the saddle. You can choose either Amber or Maroon Brown shade for the upholstery.

• One of the highlights that you'd find in the S90's cabin is the vertically-stacked nine-inch touchscreen infotainment that runs an Android-based interface. This means you also have inbuilt Google-based services like Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play. You'd also like the subtle three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel with buttons on it to control the minimalistic 12.3-inch digital driver�s display.

• The S90 is also high on the features list. So you get four-zone climate control, a PS2.5 air purifier, Bowers and Wilkins sound system with 19 speakers, a large sunroof, along with advance driver assist hardware. You also get a special glass-cut crystal clear gear-knob inside the cabin which appears as if it belongs in an art museum.

If there's one brand that goes above and beyond the requirement of safety, it's Volvo. This Swedish carmaker goes the extra mile to make sure you are always safe inside the car. For a Volvo, safety is paramount and the S90 is no different.

• You shouldn't be surprised to know that the S90 has already scored Five Stars on the NCAP tests.

• The MY2022 S90 comes equipped with a host of active and passive safety features such as adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, blind-spot detection with cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, collision warning, and park assist.

• Volvo claims to have installed new-age crash-absorbing front seats in the S90 which can absorb all vertical impacts, helping to protect your spine if the car ends up in a crash.

• Also part of the safety harness is Volvo's safety cage where the passenger compartment uses a high percentage of ultra-high-strength boron steel to create a protective cage around you.

• Meanwhile, the front and rear deformation zones help dissipate the crash energy as well. Moreover, the safety belts and airbags work together to cushion you and your passengers in case of a mishap.

Earlier, the S90 was offered a grunty diesel engine. Now, you only get a mild-hybrid petrol that puts out a healthy 250bhp of max power and around 350Nm of twisting force. Despite being a nearly two-tonne car, the S90 offers you smooth, linear driving dynamics that are not only refined but also strong in performance and equally mileage efficient.

The engine is smooth and vibration free at any rpm and the eight-speed automatic is one of the best in class. It remains seamless and you'd be hard-pressed to detect the gearbox going about its business. The powertrain never feels out of breath be it in the city or out on the highway.

This sedan makes use of double wishbones at the front and self-levelling air suspensions at the back. Its newer more rigid architecture helped with a modern suspension setup makes you feel like Volvo has hit the right spot of offering good ride quality. It's comfortable over most surfaces and doesn't unsettle when going over some harsh ones.

You'd appreciate how the S90 manages to glide over rough sections silently. Unlike, say the BMW 5 Series, the S90 might not be as engaging or fun to drive. But it offers very modern and comfortable dynamics that you'd enjoy both behind the wheel and when being chauffeured around.
