Volkswagen Tayron to Shake Up India’s SUV Segment by 2026
Volkswagen is looking to make waves in the Indian premium SUV market with its all-new Tayron - a three-row full-size SUV that will plug the gap left by the outgoing Tiguan AllSpace.
The Tayron was recently unveiled for international markets and has been spotted testing in India. It is expected to arrive in either late 2025 or early 2026 when it enters a highly competitive segment.
Utilizing the MQB EVO platform, which is shared with the new Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq, the Tayron offers a larger footprint. It measures 4,735mm in length, and with a wheelbase of 2,791mm, it offers a more considerable length than the new-gen Tiguan and a greater opportunity for space within.
Obviously a Volkswagen, the Tayron features signature LED headlights with a light bar, aggressive bumpers, large alloys and chrome accents that project a pleasant on-road presence.
Once inside, the Tayron continues to make a good impression with its upmarket cabin. Essentially, the Tiguan's interior, the Tayron gets illuminated trims for the dash, large digital screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, and good quality materials.
However, unlike the Tiguan, the Tayron features three rows of seating, making it better suited to larger families, similar to its Czech cousin, the Skoda Kodiaq.
Under the hood, the Tayron will be using the same 2.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine along with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Some markets will have diesel options but in India, we will only have the petrol option, most likely with a 48V mild-hybrid system. Customers may have the choice of 2WD and 4WD options, according to global specifications.
Volkswagen will assemble the Tayron in India from CKD kits, production for global markets is in Germany, Mexico and China. When launched, it will go up against big hitters like the Toyota Fortuner, Jeep Meridian, Citroen C5 Aircross and the Skoda Kodiaq - possibly carving out a niche with German engineering and experience.
For Indian SUV buyers, there is a serious new option that combines performance, tech and versatility.
