Renault 5 EV: Striking Design Revealed in Leaked Patents

In a surprising turn of events, leaked patent images have given the automotive world a sneak peek into Renault's upcoming mass-market EV hatchback destined for the European market—the Renault 5. Set to make its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show on February 26, 2024, the production version of this electric marvel is already causing a buzz, thanks to the leaked designs filed with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

Renault enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the design stays remarkably close to the acclaimed 2021 concept car, as implied by recent teaser images. Notable changes include slightly rounder headlight surrounds with more conventionally shaped LED blocks, and a distinctive charge indicator on the bonnet featuring a light-up '5' motif to display the battery charge level—a nod to the future of electric mobility.

The rear of the Renault 5 sees subtle modifications, with a wider gap between the upper and lower segments of the brake light and the replacement of the full-width light bar with a sleek solid-black trim piece. Alongside these design revelations, Renault has confirmed impressive specs for the EV, stating that the 52kWh battery delivers an impressive 400km range, as per WLTP tests.

Beneath its sleek exterior, the Renault 5 sits on the innovative Ampr Small platform (formerly named CMF-B-EV), which promises an exhilarating driving experience—boasting a multi-link rear axle—a rarity in the B-segment electric car category—the 5 aims to strike the perfect balance between ride comfort and handling, setting it apart from its competitors like the Renault Zoe.

Weight reduction takes centre stage in the 5's design philosophy, with a redesigned battery layout featuring four square 'big modules,' improving energy density and cutting weight by 15kg compared to Zoe's 52kWh pack. The vehicle also introduces new motors that eliminate magnets and integrate the charger, power converter, and auxiliary power-management box, resulting in an additional 20kg weight reduction compared to the Zoe.

Renault has already confirmed that the motor will generate 135hp and will be produced at the iconic Cleon factory, which currently manufactures electric powertrains for the Megane. With a perfect blend of cutting-edge design and innovative technology, the Renault 5 is poised to make a significant impact in electric vehicles when it takes the stage in February 2024.
