MG Motor India Plans To Launch Five New Models By 2028, Mostly Electric Vehicles

MG Motor India has announced its roadmap for the next five years mentioning that it will launch 4 – 5 new models, most of which will be EVs.

MG Motor India is all set to make its line-up more robust in the Indian market. The British-origin Chinese carmaker has revealed plans to launch 4 – 5 new models in the Indian market by 2028, most of which will be electric vehicles.

The company has revealed its strategic five-year business roadmap for our market, focusing on localising and Indianising the business operations. It aims to achieve 65-75 per cent of its sales from the EV portfolio by 2028. One key highlight is the aligned investment of over Rs. 5,000 crores in the Indian market for expansion and product development.

MG Motor India plans to introduce a new battery assembly unit at its second plant in Gujarat and will expand its production capacity from 1.2 lakh to 3 lakh units. The announcement also mentions taking its total workforce to 20,000, both direct and indirect, by 2028. It will focus vastly on localising the latest technology, increasing Indian shareholding over the next 2-4 years, and enhancing local sourcing and manufacturing across its operations by 2028 through a series of programs.

MG Motor India will also explore cell manufacturing and clean hydrogen-cell technology through owned or third-party facilities. Initiatives to strengthen local manufacturing of EV components and establish a battery assembly unit in Gujarat are also a part of the roadmap.

Rajeev Chaba, the CEO Emeritus of MG Motor India, further underscored the India roadmap and said, "MG India’s unwavering dedication to India is deeply ingrained in our ethos. Our growth strategy is centred around strengthening localisation, aligning more closely with the government’s 'Make in India' initiative while innovatively augmenting our promise consistently and diligently meeting the evolving needs of the market."

MG Motor India aims to train 1,00,000 students under its MG Nurture program who shall be trained in EV, ADAS, and Connected Car technologies. The trained and skilled talent will be future-ready to cater to the increased demands of manufacturing next-generation cars.
