Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, is all set to make a grand entry into the electric vehicle (EV) segment with the much-anticipated e Vitara. The electric SUV has been teased ahead of its official debut at the Auto Expo 2025, scheduled for January 17 in New Delhi. This marks a significant milestone for the automaker as it ventures into the EV space, signaling its readiness to compete with industry giants like Hyundai, Tata, and Mahindra.
Previously showcased as the eVX concept in Milan, Italy, the production-ready Maruti e Vitara retains much of its concept design. While some of the sharper elements have been softened into rounded edges, the overall aesthetic remains true to the futuristic design language of the concept.
The SUV is built on an all-new skateboard platform co-developed with Toyota, highlighting Maruti Suzuki’s strategic partnership with the Japanese automaker. Toyota’s version of this platform will spawn the Urban Cruiser EV, which will share many components with the e Vitara. Both models will be manufactured in India, furthering the country’s reputation as a hub for global EV production.
The Maruti e Vitara will be offered with two battery pack options:
49kWh Battery: Designed for the entry-level variants, this setup is expected to deliver a competitive range suitable for urban commutes.
61kWh Battery: This larger pack will power the higher trims, possibly offering an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system branded as AllGrip-e. The AWD setup is expected to enhance the SUV's appeal, particularly for customers seeking performance and off-road capabilities in an EV.
The e Vitara enters a rapidly evolving EV market and will compete with notable models like:
Hyundai Creta EV: Also debuting at the Auto Expo 2025.
MG ZS EV: Known for its established presence in the Indian EV segment.
Tata Curvv: An exciting new entrant from Tata Motors.
Mahindra BE 6: A bold electric SUV from Mahindra.
The competitive pricing and strategic features of the e Vitara could make it a game-changer in the compact SUV segment.
The Maruti e Vitara will be sold through the brand’s Nexa outlets, ensuring a premium customer experience. To support the EV ecosystem, Maruti Suzuki is also planning to roll out a network of accessible charging stations across its sales and service locations. This move aligns with the automaker’s commitment to making EVs more accessible to Indian consumers.
The Maruti e Vitara is slated for an official India launch by March 2025, with bookings and pricing details expected closer to its debut. The SUV will also cater to international markets, with a European launch planned for June 2025.
With the e Vitara, Maruti Suzuki is not just entering the EV market but aiming to redefine it. By combining innovative design, advanced technology, and a focus on accessibility, the e Vitara could set new benchmarks in the Indian automotive industry.
