Mahindra to launch all-electric XUV400

The electric passenger vehicle market in India is about to take off. On September 8, 2022, Mahindra & Mahindra will unveil the XUV400, an all-electric version of the XUV300.

Spy photos of the electric SUV leaked last month, indicating that the production-spec XUV400 will retain the look of the eXUV300 concept shown at the 2020 Auto Show. The XUV400, unlike the ICE-powered XUV300, will be longer than four metres (approximately 4.2 metres), as the sub-4-metre regulation for lower tax brackets does not apply to electric vehicles.

Aside from the increased length, the XUV400 will be distinguished from the XUV300 by aspects such as new headlights with integrated DRLs, a closed-off front grille, a new tail lamp design, and a reprofiled tailgate.

Although little is known about the XUV400's engine, Mahindra is expected to equip it with a single front-wheel-drive electric motor producing roughly 150hp and two battery pack options. It will likely have a more extensive touchscreen infotainment system with the brand's Adreno X infotainment system. According to the automaker, the XUV400 might also be outfitted with ADAS technologies.

The XUV400 will begin Mahindra's EV strategy, followed by the first of its born electric SUVs, which was revealed on August 15. Towards the end of 2024, more versions will be unveiled. The XUV400 will compete with the Tata Nexon EV, which presently has no direct competitors and will serve as the entry point into Mahindra's upcoming EV lineup.

The electric motor will likely power the front wheels only via a single-speed automatic transmission. The Mahindra XUV400 could offer a claimed range of over 400km on a single charge, along with fast charging capabilities. Mahindra XUV400 will give good competition to KIA, VOLVO and Tata Nexon. Moreover, Mahindra overtook the sales of the Reva, India's first-ever EV.
