Mahindra Thar 5-Door: Buy or Hold? Is the Bigger Off-Roader Worth the Wait?
Mahindra is ready set to launch its first five-door Thar which has drawn inspiration from Force Gurkha five-door car model. The car has been the tea of the Indian Automotive market for a while now and is expected to go on sale shortly after its debut in August. Though Mahindra has been a reliable option there are quite a few options available that one can consider while Mahindra’s Thar sale goes live offering similar off-road capabilities, good road presence, better features, and a more premium experience.
The current Mahindra Thar, even in its 3-door version, has a strong presence on the road and impressive off-road capabilities. If you're looking for a reliable off-roader and don't mind the limited space in the second row or the absence of rear doors, the 3-door Thar remains a solid choice. It offers three engine options and a decent range of features, with both rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive variants. Moreover, its price starts lower than the expected Rs 15 lakh for the upcoming 5-door version.
For those who need a vehicle that's equally adept at city driving and off-roading, the Maruti Jimny is a strong contender. Its compact size makes it easy to maneuver in urban settings, while its four-wheel-drive system ensures it can handle rough terrains. The Jimny offers a comfortable ride quality, convenient rear doors, and additional legroom in the back seats, making it a practical choice for daily use and adventures alike. Being a Maruti, it also comes with a reputation for reliability and an extensive service network.
If a compact off-roader doesn't meet your needs, the Force Gurkha 5-door might be more appealing. Launched earlier this year, this larger Gurkha variant retains the robust diesel engine and four-wheel-drive setup. Although its features focus on essentials rather than luxury, it offers a functional and adventure-ready experience. The 5-door Gurkha stands out with its 6-seater layout, making it an excellent choice for larger families.
For urban buyers who need a versatile vehicle with off-road capabilities, the Mahindra Scorpio N is an attractive option. It combines modern design, a premium interior, and an array of features, including an 8-inch touchscreen, sunroof, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Available in both 6- and 7-seater configurations, the Scorpio N provides ample space and comfort for family trips, with the added benefit of a capable four-wheel-drive system for off-road excursions.
If none of the existing options fully meet your needs, the Mahindra Thar 5-door might be worth the wait. This elongated version of the Thar is expected to offer the same powerful engine options as the current 3-door model, along with enhanced space for rear passengers and new features such as a larger touchscreen, sunroof, and dual-zone climate control. With both rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive variants, it promises versatility for both city driving and off-roading.
In summary, the decision to wait for the Mahindra Thar 5-door depends on your specific needs and preferences. If you require a reliable and affordable off-roader immediately, the current 3-door Thar, Maruti Jimny, or Force Gurkha 5-door are all excellent choices. For a more modern and versatile option, the Mahindra Scorpio N offers a premium experience with off-road capabilities. However, if you are captivated by the Thar's iconic appeal and can afford to wait a few more months, the 5-door Thar promises to bring added space, features, and the unmistakable Thar factor to your driving experience.
