Italy in talks with China: Plans of a plant with an annual capacity of more than 100,000 vehicles.

On Tuesday, Qian Xie, the head of Dongfeng's Europe division, informed reporters that the company was thinking of constructing a plant in Italy that would be able to produce over 100,000 cars annually. He also mentioned that the company was in preliminary discussions with the Rome administration and that they anticipated ideas regarding possible plant locations in the upcoming weeks.

Xie claimed that Chinese automakers like Dongfeng would be able to supply every other country in the region by setting up production in Italy, one of the biggest marketplaces in Europe.

The nationalist administration of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni intends to increase local auto production from less than 800,000 automobiles annually in 2023 to 1.3 million vehicles.

This strategic decision is justified by the opportunity to serve Europe's sizable automobile market domestically, allowing Chinese automakers such as Dongfeng to export cars to every nation in Europe. A big step in this direction may have been taken with Dongfeng's debut in the Italian market.

Also, Stellantis's Chinese partner, Dongfeng, is introducing its vehicles in Italy. The Voyah brand will be the first to go, with the MHero, Nammi, and Dongfeng brands to follow.

The possible investment by Dongfeng in Italy is a unique instance. As competition heats up, Chinese automakers like BYD and Chery are keeping a closer eye on plants in Europe. This pattern highlights Chinese automakers' increasing interest in Europe's automotive market as well as the possibility of future growth in investment and cooperation.
