In 2025, the passenger car market in India continued to be extremely competitive. Industry observers were taken aback by Mahindra's rise to second place, even as Maruti Suzuki continued to outperform competitors by a wide margin.

While several brands fought off dropping market shares from the previous year, overall sales remained strong, driven by demand for SUVs and popular compact vehicles.

Maruti Suzuki Maintains Firm

Maruti Suzuki maintained the greatest market share in 2025, at about 40%, in addition to leading by volume. Numerous automobiles were among the year's best-sellers, and their success was fueled by a large selection of reasonably priced models and robust after-sales assistance.

The Ascent and Changing Dynamics of Mahindra

Thanks in large part to the continued success of its SUV lineup, which includes flagship models like the Scorpio and XUV700, Mahindra moved up to second place, surpassing Tata Motors.

Despite remaining in the top four, Mahindra and other rivals put pressure on Tata Motors and Hyundai, causing their market shares to tighten.

Other Distinguished Players

Toyota and Kia used both new vehicle releases and established capabilities to secure strong mid-table rankings. Smaller but significant segments of the Indian market were represented by the Skoda-Volkswagen Group, MG, Honda, and Renault, which completed the top 10.

Rankings in 2026 and beyond will probably be influenced by the ongoing trend toward SUVs and electric cars, as well as competition in terms of price and features.
