Hyundai Dominates July 2024 Sales with Creta Leading the Pack: A Detailed Breakdown

Hyundai continues to assert its dominance in the Indian automotive market, securing the No. 2 spot on the sales leaderboard in July 2024, just behind Maruti Suzuki. Despite facing a slight year-on-year (YoY) and month-on-month (MoM) decline in overall sales, Hyundai managed to surpass Tata Motors by a margin of around 4,200 units, reaffirming its stronghold in the competitive landscape. The month of July 2024 saw Hyundai recording 49,013 units sold, down from 50,701 units in July 2023 and 50,103 units in June 2024, marking a 3% YoY and 2% MoM decline. However, within this mix, some models stood out, showcasing remarkable performance and solidifying Hyundai's market presence.

Hyundai Creta: The Crown Jewel

The Hyundai Creta emerged as the undisputed leader in Hyundai’s portfolio for July 2024, continuing its reign as the best-selling SUV in India. The Creta registered a significant 23% YoY growth, with sales climbing to 17,350 units from 14,062 units in July 2023. This impressive performance not only made it the top-selling Hyundai model but also the No. 1 selling car across the entire Indian automotive market last month.

The success of the Creta in 2024 can be attributed to several factors, including its robust design, advanced features, and the trust that the Hyundai brand commands among Indian consumers. The 2024 Hyundai Creta, launched in January this year, has quickly crossed the 1 lakh unit milestone, underscoring its popularity. Hyundai Venue and Exter: A Mixed Bag

While the Creta soared, the Hyundai Venue and Exter experienced a downturn in July 2024. The Venue, which once enjoyed a strong following, saw its sales dip by 12% YoY to 8,840 units from 10,062 units in July 2023. Despite this decline, the Venue managed to secure the No. 7 spot in the list of sub-4 meter SUVs sold last month, reflecting its continued relevance in the segment.

The Exter, Hyundai’s other contender in the sub-4 meter SUV segment, also faced a challenging month. Sales fell by 14% YoY to 6,037 units, down from 7,000 units in July 2023. This decline comes at a time when Hyundai has introduced the new Venue S(O)+ variant, priced at Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). This new variant, which offers a sunroof at an affordable price point, is expected to rejuvenate interest in the Venue, potentially boosting its sales in the coming months.

Hyundai i20 and i10 NIOS: Navigating the Decline

Hyundai’s compact cars, the i20 and i10 NIOS, also faced a dip in sales during July 2024. The i20 saw a marginal 1% YoY decline, with 4,937 units sold compared to 4,992 units in July 2023. The i10 NIOS, on the other hand, experienced an 8% YoY drop, with sales falling to 4,922 units from 5,354 units in the same period last year.

Despite these declines, Hyundai has been proactive in keeping its lineup fresh. The i10 NIOS, for instance, received an update with the launch of the NIOS CNG Twin Cylinder variant, priced at Rs 7.75 lakh. This model is now the second in Hyundai’s portfolio to feature this innovative technology, following the Exter Hy-CNG Duo.

Hyundai Xcent/Aura: A Bright Spot

In contrast to the declining trends seen with some other models, the Hyundai Xcent/Aura posted a 5% YoY growth in July 2024. Sales increased to 4,757 units, up from 4,514 units in July 2023. This growth is a positive sign for Hyundai, demonstrating the sustained appeal of the Xcent/Aura in the compact sedan segment.

Premium Models: Verna, Alcazar, Tucson, and Ioniq 5

Hyundai’s premium offerings had a mixed performance in July 2024. The Verna, which has traditionally been a strong performer, saw its sales remain flat at 1,420 units. The Alcazar, Hyundai’s 7-seater SUV, experienced a significant 34% MoM decline, with sales dropping to 585 units from 882 units in June 2024. This dip is notable, especially as Hyundai prepares to launch a facelifted version of the Alcazar next month, which is expected to feature new front and rear designs, along with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) borrowed from the Creta.

On the other hand, the Tucson and Ioniq 5, Hyundai’s premium SUV and electric vehicle (EV) respectively, showed positive MoM growth. Tucson sales rose by 13% to 129 units, while the Ioniq 5 saw a 20% increase, with 36 units sold. These models, though niche, continue to contribute to Hyundai’s brand image as a forward-thinking automaker in the Indian market.
