Honda is reportedly in the process of filing a patent application with the USPTO for an additional storage compartment that is concealed in the bumpers of electric cars. The patent describes ideas for an extra storage option that would be incorporated into electric car (EV) bumpers. The purpose of this hidden compartment is to give EV owners more storage space. Previously This hiding storage space was created in excitement of a time when Volvo tested delivery locations in its cars in Sweden in 2015. Volvo marketed in-car delivery at the time as a way for clients to receive critical packages even if they weren't home to sign for them during regular business hours.

What’s more in it?

A pull-out drawer that will be housed inside an electric vehicle's rear bumper is also described in the patent. This storage area, it is said, is meant for a time in the future when cars could be assigned specific delivery locations. Better security is also provided by keeping packages in this compartment as opposed to putting them on a home's front porch.

Additionally, the compartment can be accessed by a third party while the remainder of the vehicle remains unattainable. The car's trunk and doors will not have the same locking/unlocking mechanism as the storage in the bumper. Furthermore, the storage area will have an air conditioning system, making it possible to store packages safely even on hot days.

It's important to remember that, similar to any other patent application, Honda's innovative concept may not yet have been realized. It remains to be seen if this innovative concept will find its way into the manufacturing stage. Though this patent, as written, depends on a service that does not yet exist, no patent is guaranteed to be commercialized. However, Honda could probably find other uses for the storage compartment located in the rear bumper.
