Ferrari and Samsung Team Up To Bring OLED Display Technology To Future Automobiles

The Park+ Highlight of the Day includes details on the recent association between Ferrari and Samsung for new OLED touchscreens.

One of the largest suppliers of advanced driver-assistance system components, telematics, and infotainment systems to the automotive industry is Samsung, which is well known for its consumer electronics and smart devices. The company has now partnered with Ferrari, one of the most recognisable car brands in the world.

A Memorandum of Understanding between the two businesses commits them to working together to create OLED display options for upcoming Maranello-based brand production models. Benedetto Vigna, the CEO of Ferrari, and JS Choi, the president and CEO of Samsung Display, signed the agreement during a ceremony at Samsung Display's Asan campus in Korea.

"Based on our extensive expertise in OLED technology, we are poised to introduce cutting-edge display solutions that meet the Ferrari standard," JS Choi, president and CEO of Samsung Display, said in a statement.

Given that Ferrari is investing more in electrification and new powertrains, this partnership is a significant step for the automaker. Ferrari has stated that as part of this strategy, it will begin sourcing non-essential parts or software from outside vendors. The first production battery-powered model from the supercar manufacturer will result from this new strategy and is anticipated to be unveiled in the middle of this decade.

The companies did not provide information on the OLEDS' intended use, but high-resolution screens are now a common interior technology feature in cars and other forms of transportation like trains. The announcement comes on the heels of Samsung Electronics' announcement on Friday that it is cutting back on the production of memory chips and anticipates a 95.8% drop in operating profit for the first quarter compared to the same period last year. Although still in its early stages, the collaboration between Samsung and Ferrari has the potential to significantly advance innovation in the automotive sector. A greater need for top-notch, cutting-edge display solutions exists as the market for electric and high-end vehicles continues to expand.
