BYD Set to Unveil Its First Plug-In Hybrid in India on June 9, 2026
  • BYD India confirms its first-ever plug-in hybrid model will debut on June 9, 2026, marking a significant shift from its EV-only strategy in the country.

  • Two models are tipped as likely contenders: the Atto 2 DM-i and the more premium Sealion 6, both using BYD's DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV powertrain.

BYD India has officially confirmed that it will debut its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) for the Indian market on June 9, 2026.

Until now, the Chinese automaker had sold only battery electric vehicles in India, but a teaser released on May 26, 2026 signalled that things were about to change. The teaser confirmed that the upcoming model will be powered by BYD's DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV powertrain, a system the brand has deployed widely across its global portfolio.

BYD has not yet revealed which specific model will make its Indian debut, but two strong candidates have emerged based on what is currently available in the brand's international line-up.

Two PHEV Models Are in the Frame for India's Market Debut

BYD Atto 2 DM-i: A Compact PHEV With Impressive Range Figures The first likely contender is the Atto 2 DM-i, a compact SUV whose dimensions place it squarely in the same segment as the Hyundai Creta.

Under the bonnet, it uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with either a 7.8 kWh or an 18 kWh battery. System output stands at 166 hp for the smaller battery variant and 212 hp for the larger one.

Combined WLTP driving range is claimed at 928 km for the 7.8 kWh version and 998 km for the 18 kWh variant. Both are rated for an electric-only range of nearly 39 km.

For a market where range anxiety remains a real concern among buyers considering electrified vehicles, numbers like these carry genuine appeal. The Atto 2 DM-i would allow daily city commutes to run almost entirely on electricity, while the petrol engine provides confidence on longer journeys.

BYD Sealion 6: A Premium PHEV SUV With All-Wheel Drive Options

The second contender is the more premium Sealion 6, which sits a few segments above the Atto 2 and bears a visual resemblance to the Sealion 7 EV already on sale in India.

The Sealion 6 is offered with two engine options, a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated unit and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, each available with an 18.3 kWh or a 26.6 kWh battery pack.

The naturally aspirated PHEV setup is front-wheel drive only and produces a combined 218 hp, with an NEDC-tested electric-only range of 140 km.

The turbocharged variant, on the other hand, comes with all-wheel drive as standard and pushes out up to 344 hp, with 128 km of electric-only range.

BYD claims a combined driving range of 1,092 km for the Sealion 6 PHEV, a figure that would make it one of the most capable vehicles of its type available in the country.

What BYD's PHEV Entry Means for the Indian Automotive Market

India's electrified SUV segment has been expanding steadily, but plug-in hybrids have so far remained a niche proposition. BYD's decision to introduce a PHEV here could help bridge the gap for buyers who want the benefits of electric driving without fully committing to a pure EV. The June 9, 2026 debut is expected to be a reveal event, with pricing and availability details likely to follow at a later stage.
