BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle maker, has teased the launch of a facelifted version of its e6 MPV in India. The updated e6, which was first unveiled at the GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) earlier this year, is expected to hit the Indian market by Diwali. The e6 was initially introduced in India as a commercial vehicle, but in September 2022, it became available for private buyers as well. With this facelift, BYD aims to offer a more appealing package with new features and design tweaks.
The facelifted e6 will have several noticeable changes to its exterior. The front of the car now features a set of new full-LED headlamps that are connected by a sleek satin trim with the BYD logo. The daytime running lamps (DRLs) have also been redesigned for a more modern look. The front bumper gets an upgrade too, with more contoured air vents on the edges and chrome accents that add a touch of elegance.
At the back, the e6 facelift boasts new, larger wraparound tail lamps that offer more visual appeal. The rear bumper has been slightly tweaked to include chrome inserts, similar to the front. While the side profile remains mostly unchanged, there is an expectation that the e6 will come with a fresh set of alloy wheels. These changes provide the car with a more contemporary and refined appearance.
Inside, the facelifted e6 sees some significant updates. The most notable change is the introduction of a larger 12.8-inch floating touchscreen, which is an upgrade from the 10.1-inch screen in the current model. This bigger screen is likely to enhance the overall user experience, providing clearer visuals and more accessible controls. The dashboard layout remains largely the same, but the center console has been revised slightly to include two wireless charging pads, new switches, and a new drive selector lever.
BYD has also introduced a new steering wheel design, but the instrument cluster still uses analog dials, maintaining a blend of modern and traditional elements. The facelifted model is expected to offer a range of features, including automatic climate control, 360-degree cameras, cruise control, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a powered tailgate.
Internationally, the BYD e6 is available in both 6-seater and 7-seater configurations, offering flexibility for different markets. However, it remains uncertain whether BYD will bring these configurations to India. The current India-specific model of the e6 is a 5-seater. The possibility of new seating arrangements could attract more family buyers looking for spacious electric vehicles.
The e6 facelift in Indonesia comes with two battery pack options: a 55.4kWh unit with a claimed range of 420 km and a 71.8kWh unit with a longer range of 530 km. The power output also varies with the battery size; the smaller battery produces 163 hp, while the larger battery offers a more powerful 204 hp. Both versions provide a torque of 310 Nm, which is a substantial improvement compared to the 95 hp and 180 Nm torque of the existing model.
In India, BYD already offers the 71.8kWh battery variant, and it is likely to continue with this option in the facelifted model. This larger battery’s range is expected to increase slightly by about 8 km. However, whether the smaller 55.4kWh battery variant will be available in India is still unknown.
The current BYD e6 is priced at around Rs 29.15 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. The facelifted version, with all its new features and updates, is expected to come with a slight price increase. However, even with the anticipated price hike, the e6 remains an attractive option as there is no direct competitor in the electric MPV segment in India. The updated design and added features are likely to appeal to a broader audience, especially those looking for an eco-friendly, spacious, and tech-loaded vehicle.
The BYD e6 facelift seems poised to bring fresh energy to the Indian electric vehicle market. With its updated design, enhanced interior, and improved features, it offers a compelling package for those looking to switch to electric mobility. The inclusion of a larger touchscreen, better battery options, and more safety and convenience features make the e6 facelift a strong contender in the segment.
As the launch date nears, expected around Diwali, potential buyers will be watching closely to see if BYD can deliver on its promises and make a significant impact in the Indian market. If BYD manages to price the facelift competitively and include some of the international features, the e6 could easily carve a niche for itself among electric vehicle enthusiasts in India.
