On May 21, 2025, auto-rickshaw unions across Maharashtra organized protests outside Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to oppose the state government's recent approval of e-bike taxi services. The demonstrations were coordinated by the Joint Action Committee of Auto Rickshaw Driver-Owner Associations of Maharashtra, representing over 1.5 million auto drivers statewide.

In Mumbai, a significant protest took place outside the Andheri RTO office, led by the Mumbai Auto Rickshaw-Taximen’s Union. Union leader Shashank Sharad Rao criticized the government's decision, stating that it was made without consulting existing auto unions and poses a direct threat to the livelihoods of many drivers who are already under financial strain.

The state government's approval of e-bike taxis in April 2025 aims to promote green mobility and provide self-employment opportunities for unemployed youth. The initiative is expected to generate approximately 20,000 jobs across Maharashtra.

However, auto unions argue that the introduction of e-bike taxis will lead to increased competition, reduced earnings, and job insecurity for existing auto drivers. They also express concerns about the lack of regulatory clarity and potential safety issues associated with e-bike taxi services.

The unions have submitted a formal representation to the government, demanding the immediate cancellation of the e-bike taxi permit policy. They have also warned of intensified protests if their concerns are not addressed promptly.
