To enforce safety regulations and ensure the well-being of students, the Ludhiana traffic police have taken decisive action, issuing a total of 221 challans to school vans and buses between April 13 and April 30. This rigorous enforcement drive comes in response to orders from the Punjab government, prompted by a recent tragic incident involving a school bus in Haryana.

The Punjab government's directive instructed the police to conduct thorough checks of school vehicles to verify compliance with the Safe School Vahan norms. Moreover, authorities were tasked with implementing strict measures against violators and submitting a compliance report to the government by April 30.

Assistant Commissioner of Police - Traffic, Chiranjiv Lamba, shed light on the initiative, stating, "Upon receiving government orders on April 12, the traffic police swiftly initiated a checking drive from April 13 onwards. Specialized check-posts were established around schools and key junctions across the city, where school buses underwent thorough inspections."

Of the 221 challans issued during the specified period, a significant portion—85 challans—were related to drivers not adhering to uniform and nameplate requirements. Additionally, 26 challans were issued for failure to display the school's name on the vehicle, while 20 were issued for exceeding the seating capacity. Other violations included 28 instances of attendants not wearing uniforms and nameplates, 16 cases of vehicles lacking the mandated yellow paint, and 15 instances of absence of female attendants.

Furthermore, 17 challans were issued for speeding, 18 for failure to display route plates and timetables, and three for drivers not wearing seat belts. Additionally, single instances of violations included the absence of a first aid box, the absence of a fitness certificate, and incorrect parking.

While a compliance report was promptly submitted as per the government's directives, ACP Lamba emphasized the ongoing commitment of the traffic police to ensure the safety of school students. He affirmed that the enforcement drive would persist, underscoring the paramount importance of adhering to safety protocols to safeguard the lives of young commuters.

The series of challans reflects a proactive approach by the Ludhiana traffic police to uphold safety standards and enforce regulations in the wake of the tragic incident in Haryana. By addressing various violations and ensuring compliance with the Safe School Vahan norms, authorities aim to mitigate risks and create a safer environment for students commuting via school buses and vans.
