2024 Nissan X-Trail Unveiled: Key Insights from Our First Drive
The 2024 Nissan X-Trail, the latest addition to Nissan’s Indian lineup, has made its debut, creating waves in the full-size SUV segment. Set to be launched in August 2024, the X-Trail will be sold in India through the Completely Built-Up (CBU) route. Having had the chance to drive this new SUV, here are five key takeaways that reveal what the X-Trail brings to the table.
The Nissan X-Trail commands attention with its impressive dimensions—4,680 mm in length, 1,840 mm in width, and 1,725 mm in height. Its substantial size ensures a commanding road presence that is noticeably greater than some of its rivals, such as the Skoda Kodiaq. The X-Trail’s design is enhanced by 20-inch alloy wheels, which add to its robust and attractive appearance.
However, for an SUV entering the competitive realm of the MG Gloster and Toyota Fortuner, the lack of LED indicators both front and rear is a notable omission. This feature is increasingly becoming a standard expectation in this segment and its absence is conspicuous.
Inside, the X-Trail showcases a well-crafted cabin with high-quality materials. The upper dashboard features soft-touch surfaces, while the hard plastics on the lower parts of the dashboard are of commendable quality. The second row of seats offers generous space, comfortably accommodating three passengers. Practical elements include a large center armrest with a butterfly opening, additional armrests for the middle row, and bottle holders on all doors.
However, the third row is less accommodating, best suited for children or pets due to its cramped space. Additionally, it lacks dedicated AC vents, which could detract from overall comfort during longer journeys.
The X-Trail comes equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, wireless phone charging, and a panoramic sunroof. While these features are functional, they lack the premium feel expected in this segment. The 8-inch touchscreen, reminiscent of the one in the Nissan Kicks, appears outdated and operates slowly. Although the 12.3-inch driver’s display offers a modern touch, it lacks extensive customization and animation options.
Moreover, several advanced features found in global models are missing from the India-spec X-Trail. Notably absent are ventilated front seats, electrically adjustable front seats, leatherette upholstery, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). These omissions are significant given the competitive nature of the SUV market.
Under the hood, the X-Trail is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 163 PS and 300 Nm of torque, paired with a CVT automatic gearbox. While the engine delivers smooth performance at lower speeds and offers good refinement, it falls short in terms of excitement. In comparison to rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq, which features a more powerful 2-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), the X-Trail feels less exhilarating. Additionally, the absence of an all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant limits its appeal for those seeking off-road capabilities.
Nissan’s decision to bring the X-Trail to India via the CBU route means it is expected to be priced starting from Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom). Given the features and performance on offer, this price point may seem steep. The X-Trail’s higher price could be a concern for potential buyers, especially when compared to competitors offering more in terms of both features and driving dynamics at similar or lower price points.
The 2024 Nissan X-Trail introduces a new contender to the full-size SUV market in India. While it impresses with its design and offers a comfortable, well-appointed interior, it falls short in several areas including feature set, performance, and pricing. As the launch date approaches, potential buyers will need to weigh these factors carefully against the offerings of established competitors. Despite its strong road presence and sophisticated design, the X-Trail’s success will largely depend on its ability to justify its premium pricing with enhanced features and performance.
