In New Delhi, Maruti Suzuki revealed a flex fuel-powered Wagon R prototype as part of its ongoing assessment of the technology for the Indian market. A 20 percent (E20) to 85 percent (E85) ethanol-to-petrol ratio is what the Wagon R prototype is intended to run on (E85).

Flex fuel vehicles need a few modifications over regular gasoline engines to be able to handle the corrosive nature of ethanol and its lower calorific value

New fuel system innovations are included in the Wagon R flex fuel prototype, including a heated fuel rail for cold start assistance and an ethanol sensor for ethanol percentage identification. Updates to the fuel pump, fuel injector, and other mechanical parts are also made to the engine to increase its durability. Additionally, the engine will adhere to the stricter BS6 Phase-II emission standards.

Maruti claims it will introduce its first flex fuel vehicle in the compact segment by 2025.
